My Guest House is in Picton, in beautiful Prince Edward County, 2.5 hours East of Toronto, Ontario. PEC is an island with bridges from the mainland, so there is car access (either from Carrying Place, Belleville, or Tyendinaga Mohawk Reserve). Prince Edward County is a magical place. Some of us call it "Heaven, Ontario". Why?
Well, first of all, there's its natural beauty: limstone cliffs; the world's largest fresh water sand dunes; bays; an old rail trail that you can bike or walk for miles through orchards, cornfields, and pumpkin patches; beautiful golden sand beaches and pebble beaches, a fabled magic lake on top of a mountain. We have PEPTBO, a registered charity and migration monitoring station run by volunteers. We have migratory birds from all over the world pass by or stop to rest on our island. THE JOB: Day-to-day operations of the eco guest house: managing recycling, including making and intalling paper liners for waste containers, greeting and checking in guests and ensuring that they participate in our eco-friendly practices, housekeeping, eco-friendly gardening, and being in charge when I'm away. It would rock my world if you are able to do small repairs. If work is slow at the Guest House, we would go up to my off-grid cabin and do some work up there.
THE ECO PART OF IT: My goal is to offer affordable vacation accoms to folks who are ecologically-minded and who love and respect The Earth — the hikers, the world travellers, the kayak- and canoe-ers; those who like to be out and about in Nature, the non-materialistic; those who care what goes into landfill, who appreciate the preciousness of our resources, including animal life, those who enjoy a sunrise, a sunset, a home-cooked meal accented with fresh herbs from my herb garden and then saving the dishwater for the garden; those who don't need modernity — rainforest showerheads, marble counter-tops, private washrooms, or air conditioning when a fan will do. I'm committed to repairing and recycling rather than buying new, to providing non-toxic eco-friendly cleaners, cloths, laundry supplies, and clotheslines.
THE PAY: Let's negotiate this so that it's in line with what feels right to you. My negotiating items are cash, housing, experience, location, and a stay at my land in Northbrook, On. Let's get creative and make a plan!
WHO: You are an ecologically-minded person who's cheery, hardworking, curious, enjoys people, and believes in reliability and committment. If given a task, you take pride in doing it well. If you make mistakes, you initiate solutions. If you have a partner, I'd welcome you both so that your summer is as groovy as it can be.
