Title: Wildlife Rehabilitation Internship
Organization: Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre

Location: Sudbury, Ontario
Housing: accom. available, see below

Start Date: July 2020

Length of internship: 4-8 weeks (interns available for longer durations will take priority) 40-50 hour/week commitment.

Summary: During this unpaid internship you will assist the manager and volunteers with all aspects of animal care.

Sessions, schedule, and housing:

The weekly requirement is 40 hrs comprised of 5 shifts that are 8.5 hours each with ½ hour lunch break. Depending on scheduling, you may be asked to work split shifts.

Each shift will be 8am – 4:30pm or 2:30pm – 11pm (shifts may vary with seasonal demands).

Accommodation may be provided on site for up to 2 interns, with applicants committing to longer durations of stay being given priority. If you have your own accommodation nearby that is great as well. Nearest bus stop is 2.5 km away.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Daily husbandry related activities cleaning, diet preparation, and feeding
  • Daily routines that include laundry, cleaning enclosures, and dish washing
  • For those staying for longer periods, advanced animal care training will be given on tube feeding, fracture stabilization, medication dosing, and subcutaneous fluid administration
  • Assist with intake procedures for new patients
  • Species identification and determining specific care requirements based on natural history and species behavior
  • Safe handling skills for a wide variety of wildlife including birds, mammals and reptile
  • Assist with wildlife releases
  • Responsible for animal enrichment
  • Learn about the natural history and behavior of native Ontario wildlife
  • Learn medical record keeping skills
  • Assist in transporting/rescuing wildlife from local area or veterinary clinic (desired but not required)


  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Science studies, natural science studies, or animal care background preferred
  • Must have respect for wildlife and courtesy toward the public

Job Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks such as cleaning, lifting, bending, stooping, etc
  • Must be able to work independently and as a team member
  • Must be able to perform tedious tasks for long periods of time
  • Must be able to work quickly and efficiently while following directions and procedures
  • Must be able to multitask and work in a very stressful environment
  • Must be able to full 8.5 hour shift with a ½ hour lunch break
  • This is an unpaid internship

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate ratio and percentages.

Physical Demands: Stand for extended periods of time; lift up to 20kg; bend to clean enclosures; walk to outside enclosures.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals; routine exposure to zoonotic diseases, aggressive and feral animals; and outside weather conditions.

  • Must commit to the entire length of the internship
  • be on time, be clean and presentable
  • be respectful and encourage a team-oriented approach to work
  • be responsible and conscientious of time management
  • have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • have excellent organizational skills
  • comply with health and safety regulations of the facility
  • report to the Manager or supervisor for accuracy and satisfaction of work completed.
