Food Forest Volunteer Opportunities

Wanted: Food Forest Volunteer Assistant
Organization: Black Creek Community Farm
Location: Jane and Steele, Toronto / North York, Ontario

About BCCF’s Food Forest: Currently, the west side of the trail that surrounds Black Creek Community Farm is being transformed into a promising Food Forest, where a number of fruit trees, berries, and perennial herbs have been planted and managed, guided by permaculture principles.

Come volunteer with us and help us to continue developing this amazing project. This is going to be a great opportunity for you to meet people, gain and share knowledge, and help build a landscape where environment and food production can be managed in a sustainable way. Hopefully in a few years, community and visitors will be able to walk through BCCF Farm Park to contemplate nature, learn and taste fresh food along the way...

Tools and gloves will be provided. Tokens available upon request.

Food Forest Regular Volunteer OpportunitiesTuesdays 10am to 4pm; Fridays 10am to 4pm. Help build a biodiverse landscape that includes food and pollinator plants, guided by permaculture principles and sustainable gardening techniques.  We will carry out a series of activities such as planting, composting, weeding and invasive species removal, creating and maintaining paths and garden beds.  Incentive: $5 voucher per week volunteered to be redeemed at our farm store.

Food Forest Stewardship Drop-In Day Saturday Nov 03rd, 10am to 3pm. Help transform the western woodland surrounding the farm into a bountiful and biodiverse Food Forest guided by permaculture principles. Includes planting, weeding and removing invasive species, creating and maintaining paths and garden beds. Lunch provided. 

Qualifications:

  • Self motivated,
  • Willing to learn and follow intructions
  • Attentive to detail
  • Good communications skills
  • Able to work individually and in teams, following intructions and taking iniciative when applicable
  • Physically capable of gardening tasks. Ability to lift and bend desirable.
  • Gardening, environmental and/or plant knowledge an asset
