VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

Position: Neighbourhood Leader
Organization: Hidden Harvest Ottawa
Location: Ottawa, Ontario

Are you passionate about food security, local food systems, community-building, and environmental sustainability? Want to make a difference in your community, and learn about the fruit and nut trees that grow in Ottawa? Interested in gaining knowledge about harvesting various types of fruit and nuts and better understanding concepts of permaculture and agroecology?

Hidden Harvest Ottawa is a local organization that works to rescue local food in an effort to address all of the above issues - and we are currently seeking Neighbourhood Leaders!

Fruit and nuts that would otherwise go to waste on public and private property are rescued by groups of volunteers through insured harvest events, led by our trained Neighbourhood Leaders. The bounty collected is split four ways: at least one-quarter goes to the nearest food agency, one-quarter is shared with the homeowner, one-quarter is shared with the volunteer harvesters, and up to one-quarter goes back to Hidden Harvest Ottawa. Harvest events provide the opportunity, education, infrastructure and legal means for people to access the edible fruit and nut trees around them. By removing challenges to access this low-hanging fruit, our volunteers are increasing their food sovereignty, addressing climate change, preventing food waste and evolving our culture to be a food-tree friendly city.

Requirements:

  • Organized, reliable, and able to manage a small team of volunteers
  • Dedicated and commited to following through on completing your training and minimum number of harvests per season (detailed at the training session)
  • Interested in local fruit and nuts, food security, and/or environmental sustainability

Neighbourhood Leaders are the backbone of our volunteer-driven organization. Our trained Neighbourhood Leaders manage homeowner relations and organize and lead our harvest events across the city.

Neighbourhood Leaders get special access and first claim to rare fruit harvests! They also have the freedom to choose which harvests they run, where, and when, so it's the most convenient way to participate in harvesting the best fruit and nuts in your neighbourhood! We value our Neighbourhood Leaders immensely, and they are an integral part of our organization. This is a great opportunity to meet new people, support a local food initiative, and deepen your connection to your environment and community!

We are hosting a Volunteer Neighbourhood Leader Training Session on Monday September 11! This is a great opportunity to learn more about what Hidden Harvest is all about, ask any questions you might have, and meet other like-minded folks! Details below:
