The Biosphere Eco-City (BEC) model

Biosphere Eco-City (BEC) is a model to make an urban centred region sustainable, based on participation and cooperation. It provides benefits for both people and nature.

BEC encourages independent action and sharing of experience to accelerate progress. Grass-roots activities are important in complementing government-led planning for sustainability.

BEC uses elements that are simple, comparable and affordable so that cooperation will support simultaneous advancement of sustainability locally, nationally, and internationally.

About the Organization

Our mission is to achieve sustainability in Ottawa in partnership with our stakeholders by sharing ideas, knowledge, and experience. Our vision is for an environmentally sustainable City that support a high quality of life, now and for future generations.

Role of the Chair of the Board:

The Chair is the chief executive officer of the Corporation and is in charge of ensuring that OBEC is operating properly. This includes:

• Approving projects, alongside the Board of Directors, that are large or require funds
• Signing off on administrative documents that require the Chair’s authority to proceed
• Leading the meetings of the Board of Directors
• Evaluating the strategic direction of the organization to ensure OBEC is working towards meeting its mission
• Alongside Board of Directors, regularly checking in with and supporting staff, on ongoing work and projects

The Chair is elected by Council at the Annual General Meeting, which is held every January. This volunteer position averages out to be 12-36 hours per month, depending on operational requirements.

Experience and Competencies:

• 2-5 years of experience in a professional environment. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the non-governmental (NGO) field.
• Ability to chair meetings, manage administrative tasks and support participation of all members
• Knowledge of business operations such as insurance, financial management of an organization, corporate requirements of an NGO is an asset
• Interest, passion and some knowledge and experience in environmental and sustainability issues, preferably in Ottawa
• Strong interpersonal, team-management and communication skills
