Positions: Wildwood Volunteer Nature Guide
Organization: Ecoforestry Institute Society – Wildwood Ecoforest
Ladysmith / Nanaimo & Duncan BC

Become a Wildwood Ecoforest Volunteer Nature Guide!

  • Connect with nature
  • Share your passion for forests
  • Learn new skills

The Ecoforestry Institute Society is looking for volunteer Nature Guides to lead outdoor education programs at Wildwood for students from K-12. Reporting to the Education Coordinator, volunteers are trained to lead engaging, BC curriculum-based programs, connecting students to nature and exploring a working forest. A minimum of 1 program/month is required. It's a flexible opportunity, a couple of hours on dates that match your schedule. Training and professional development opportunities are provided. Programs run in the fall from September-November and in the spring from April-June.

Wildwood is a 77-acre ecoforest nestled along the shores of Quennell Lake just north of Ladysmith, British Columbia. It lies within the traditional territories of the Stz’uminus and Snuneymuxw Coast Salish First Nations. A rare and unique demonstration ecoforest, Wildwood represents a vanishing coastal Douglas-fir ecosystem once abundant on Vancouver Island. Only .5% of these forests remain. These ancient trees stand among a profusion of western red-cedar, bigleaf maple, flowering dogwood and arbutus trees, and bring an amazing presence to the forest, stately in their towering height and size.

Wildwood also boasts a richness of wildlife, including a rare and protected colony of little brown bats, giant ant hills, banana slugs, eagles, osprey, pileated woodpeckers, great horned owls, great blue herons, wrens, warblers and towhees. Many indigenous plants enrich the forest, including coralroot and rattlesnake plantain orchids, wild roses, oceanspray, salal, Oregon-grape and salmonberry, along with a myriad of mosses, lichens and fungi.

We are looking for volunteers who:

  • Are able to effectively communicate in an enthusiastic and engaging manner with children of all ages.
  • Have a passion for the natural world and an enthusiasm for connecting people with nature.
  • Are able to work independently and as a team.
  • Have good public speaking skills.
  • Enjoy working with children.
  • Live in the Nanaimo, Ladysmith or Cedar area and are able to provide their own transportation to Wildwood.
  • A criminal record check is required.
