INTERNSHIP / VOLUNTEER

Songbird Internship 2018

Position: Songbird Rehabilitation Intern
Type: unpaid/volunteer; off-site housing may available at no cost (see below)
Organization: Toronto Wildlife Centre
Location(s): Downsview Park, Toronto/North York, Ontario

Each year our experienced staff and volunteers care for over 900 songbirds. From hummingbirds to northern flickers, we care for over 80 species of birds annually, most of which are migratory. Many of these birds collide with buildings while travelling throughout the city, and they frequently require medical care in addition to daily cleaning and feeding. Songbirds are a diverse group of species that require a high level of specialized and well managed care.

This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain experience with the care of songbirds in a rehabilitation setting. During this challenging internship, interns will learn a wide range of skills while working alongside staff until they are able to work independently. Interns will be responsible for assisting with the care of orphaned, sick and injured songbirds admitted to TWC. They will assist staff with the daily care of patients, including cleaning, feeding, routine exams and treatments. Depending on their age and species, each bird has specific requirements for care, diet, housing and release back to the wild. Interns will learn species identification and natural history of passerines.

Interns will ultimately be responsible for maintaining the health and well-being of all birds within the program. They will be responsible for keeping accurate records, supervising volunteers and ensuring the rooms is maintained in a clean and orderly condition at all times. Interns should be able to work cheerfully and cooperatively with rehabilitation staff in performing the necessary tasks needed in order to ensure the smooth operation of TWC.

Requirements:

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and be current on their tetanus vaccine. Because patients require care every day of the year, we require interns to have a flexible schedule as weekends, evenings and holidays are required. Days are scheduled as 10 hours; however, since this is a task-based workplace, longer hours are frequently required in order to complete all necessary tasks.

Interns must be comfortable working long hours with a demanding workload. Applicants need to have a strong personal work ethic, punctuality, initiative and a strong desire to learn. Good communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to speak, read and write English proficiently, and strong organizational skills are also required. Applicants must have animal care experience and a strong preference will be given to those with experience handling birds.

Amenities:

Off-site housing may available at no cost on a first come first served basis. However, internet/TV is not provided. Please also note that personal transportation will be necessary as public transportation is not practical from that location.

Payment:

Unpaid
