Position: Environmental Advisor
Type: 12-months full-time — volunteer plus living allowance, accom., airfare, more (see below)

Uniterra is a leading Canadian international volunteer cooperation and development program, jointly implemented by the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI) and World University Service of Canada (WUSC).


The partner organization for this assignment is ASARBOLSEM (Asociación Artesanal Boliviana Señor de Mayo), leader in the development of Fair Trade and Social Solidarity Economy in Latin America. The Association is a member of IFAT (The world’s leading trade fair for environmental technologies) and is invited each year to testify to the progress of fair trade and its contribution to the income of small producers around the world. ASARBOLSEM has previously been able to exhibit in Italy, UK, Switzerland, Canada, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, among other countries, as well as in Bolivia, and during the Fair Trade Fortnight in France. The Association is also recognized by importers registered in the AELE network, with whom they carry out surveillance, monitoring and evaluation and fair trade impact activities.

The objective of this assignment is to support producers and sellers of artisanal llama and alpaca products, in order to establish and strengthen their internal and external communication. The goal is to foster the creation of linkages with foreign or domestic customers who visit the shop in person or even shop from abroad


  • Under the direction of the coordinator and in collaboration with the Uniterra program officer, the volunteer shall support building the capacities of the Uniterra program’s partners in relation to eco-friendly practices, thereby contributing to fostering the care of renewable and non-renewable resources.
  • Support the execution of an assessment on the environmental practices of the sector partners with whom the volunteer will be collaborating
  • Promote the development of internal environmental policies designed to promote the rational use of resources, recycling and awareness of the importance of environmental care
  • Facilitate training activities on the importance of the environment, environmental impacts and consequences and prevention practices
  • Facilitate training activities on environmental risk mitigation measures, which bear on the everyday activities carried out by sector partners
  • Promote campaigns on environmental care with sector partners, civil society and other local actors working on environmental issues
  • Facilitate the preparation of print materials, including booklets, to build the capacities of sector partners in terms of environmental care
  • Produce reports for the program and partners, as required
  • Ensure that results targeting young women or young men, take into account the need to actively engage youth


  • Diploma in Environment, Environmental Economics or other related field
  • Knowledge in ennviromentale or climate change in links with social projects.
  • Experience in capacity building on environmental issues and climate change.
  • Experience working on the environment on social projects.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work in an intercultural environment.
  • Knowledge of gender equity and gender mainstreaming issues.
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good command of Spanish (ESSENTIAL)
  • Professional experience in developing countries and development projects an asset


  • Support and guidance prior to departure and while on assignment in country.
  • Participation in a pre-departure training where you will have the opportunity to learn about the program, gain practical skills for living and working in an intercultural context and meet other volunteers. Travel, meals and accommodation are covered.
  • In-country orientation and briefing upon arrival in-country.
  • Language training in-country where required.
  • Return flights, visas and work permits.
  • Cost of required country specific vaccinations and antimalarials.
  • Health insurance.
  • Modest monthly living allowance while overseas.
  • Accommodation while overseas.
  • Vacation leave entitlement.
  • Return debriefing in Canada after completion of assignment. Travel, meals and accommodation are covered.

  • Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada between the age of 18-70.
  • Departure date is contingent upon the timely completion of all administrative requirements (e.g. visa processes, medical clearance, police checks, travel documentation).
  • With the support of the program, all volunteers shall undertake to make a minimum financial contribution of $1,500 for participating in the program.
