PUBLIC RALLY

Event: Separate Oil and State, #stopKM
Type: democratic public event / unpaid / volunteer
Organizer: Council of Canadians
Location: Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Ontario

Please join us for an emergency rally on Parliament Hill, 4:30 pm - Separate Oil and State, #stopKM

This rally will be held the day the Trudeau government tables legislation to support Kinder Morgan in the House of Commons.

Date: The government is required to give 48 hours notice before it tables legislation, when this happens, the date will be finalized. The date will be between April 24 and May 7, please RSVP on our facebook event for updates!

We will stand in solidarity with Indigenous-led opposition against the Kinder Morgan pipeline. As recently reported by the media after Prime Minister Trudeau met with Premiers Rachel Notley and John Horgan (no Indigenous voices were present), Grand Chief Stewart Phillip stated: "Making unilateral decisions about projects on unceded Indigenous territories is the exact opposite of reconciliation….We confirm that our opposition is resolute, and we fully intend to stop this massively destructive pipeline from being built.”

The federal Liberals are tabling this legislation while also making the outrageous choice to have closed door meetings with the Texas-based Kinder Morgan corporation aimed at spending taxpayer money on a bailout for their tar sands pipeline.

Bring pots and pans and prepare to be loud!

Speakers TBA, this is a family-friendly event.

The pipeline threatens the Coast Salish Sea with a diluted bitumen spill, violates UNDRIP, is inconsistent with the Paris Climate Agreement and was approved under the broken Harper-era National Energy Board process which the Liberals band-aid measures failed to fix.

I will see you there!

(1) Ottawa, April 23rd, 4:30pm:   The ‘Ottawa Constituents Against KM’ group is calling everyone to a rally at the uOttawa’s Tabaret Hall where Jim Carr is to deliver a keynote address titled “Public Confidence in Energy Decision Making”.  In Halifax today, PM Trudeau, Min. McKenna, and Min. Carr are insisting that the KM pipeline will be built.   Min. McKenna was seen begging the audience to be patient.  The government’s long-term plan will work, she insists.   Few outside analysts agree.  At this same time, Min. Freeland is getting closer to signing on to NAFTA, at least in principle for now.   If one thinks that the KM pipeline is bad, read an outside analysis of the NAFTA agreement as it presently stands.   Start with The Council of Canadians report; then download the report itself.   Note their key question and answer:  “What does that mean for Canada’s climate? The report’s economic modeling shows that NAFTA’s energy proportionality rules would lock in 1488 megatonnes more greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This is double Canada’s yearly emissions and more than 12 times greater than its 2050 climate pollution target.”  Armed with this background information, make sure you’re at Tabaret Hall at 4:30 pm.

(2) Ottawa, April 23rd, 7pm:  Ottawa organizers, Ken Johnson and Angela Keller-Herzog, are hosting speaker Linda Lane, a core organizer of the ‘Greater Victoria Acting Together’ group. With a vision to bring various groups in Victoria together to work for the common good of the community, this group has achieved remarkable success.  Besides describing Victoria’s experience, Ms. Lane’s presentation will also include success stories from the ‘Metro Vancouver Alliance’ group, after which the Victoria group was modeled.  For those wanting more done in Ottawa but are running into frustrations, this talk will offer many welcome insights. This free presentation will be held at the Glebe Community Centre from 7 - 9 pm.      Read more

(3) Ottawa, April 24th and 25th: Similar to Victoria’s group, community groups here in Ottawa are striving to work out better sustainability plans, developing their own methods in doing so.   The Ottawa Biosphere Eco-City group, for one, is setting up discussion groups on these dates.  Read more.
