ECO-TOURISM JOBS

Position: Lodge Helper
Employer: Great Bear Lodge
Location: near Port Hardy, North Vancouver Island, BC
Housing: accommodation and meals provided (see below)
Term: end of August until late October, 2019

Great Bear Lodge is seeking a highly motivated candidate to work as the Lodge Helper at our ecotourism lodge on the central coast of British Columbia. We host people from around the world to see the grizzly bears of the Great Bear Rainforest. The lodge accommodates a maximum of 16 guests, thus providing a very personal experience.

Description: Come and experience the beauty and wonder of the Great Bear Rainforest! Enjoy the unique experience of living in a floating cabin while you host guests in a remote, uninhabited river valley. Get the opportunity to join some of our tours to go looking for bears, eagles, seals, otters and other amazing wildlife. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in customer service in ecotourism while living in a spectacular wilderness setting.

Your duties will include:

  • Housekeeping tasks for the guest lodge. Those tasks may include changing rooms following guests departure, washing dishes, vacuuming floors, sweeping docks, cleaning windows, washing floors, etc.

  • Acting as a welcoming host to the guests when they take breaks from wildlife viewing by greeting them and providing warm drinks/snacks.

  • Assisting the Lodge Chef in beverage and meal service and clean-up, as well as preparing lunches for staff.

We are a small team and occasionally you may be called upon to assist with other tasks that are outside of this job description. You will be required to wear a uniform and will be an integral part of the guest service team, delivering world-class service to our guests.

Minimum Position requirements:

  1. Cheerful outlook with a can-do attitude.

  2. Be a self-starter with a strong work ethic.

  3. Strong interpersonal skills, clean professional appearance.

  4. Ability to work and live very closely with other staff members and guests.

  5. Savor life in a remote wilderness setting with limited access to communication or traditional social life.

Details:

  • Period of employment will run from the end of August until late October.

  • Work days are 8-9 hours long on average.

  • During this time, you will have two breaks in town (where you will fly back to Port Hardy). Port Hardy is small by most standards. It is 6 hours by car from Victoria and 8 hours by car and ferry from Vancouver.

  • Accommodation and meals are provided in the staff cabin at the lodge, as is transportation between Port Hardy and the lodge. There is a staff apartment available for staff use in Port Hardy for your breaks.

  • At the lodge, you will be sharing a room in the staff bunkhouse. The bunkhouse is limited in terms of amenities, but is comfortable.

  • We work in a rainforest. It can rain daily for two weeks. It can also be sunny for two weeks.

  • You will be living and working on a small floating facility, which feels like being on a large boat.

  • Communication options include limited internet access and use of the satellite telephone.

Background:

We are fortunate to live and work in a beautiful ecosystem and our goal is to share this special place with guests from all over the world in a sustainable manner. The wildlife call this place home, we are merely guests in their valley.
