Position: Rooftop Farm To Table Associate
Organization: Riverdale Hub
Location: Greenwood & Gerrard, East End Toronto, Ontario


Riverdale Hub is a unique, holistic community space in Little India with a vegan/vegetarian cafe, coworking space, event rental and studio spaces, and an organic rooftop garden.

We’re looking for an energetic go-getter with a passion for healthy, local food to fill the full-time role of Rooftop farm-to-table associate.

Part barista, part rooftop organic farmer and part community organizer, this role is perfect for an extrovert with a strong social justice focus who thrives when wearing many hats. The ideal candidate has considerable cafe experience and extensive knowledge of organic rooftop gardening. A positive attitude and customer service focus are a must.


Cafe (50%):

  • Prepare high quality traditional espresso-based beverages

  • Food prep, baking, and assisting with catering prep as needed

  • Developing and costing seasonal menu based on what’s plentiful hyper-locally

  • Cash Handling - Touch Bistro experience preferred

  • Customer Service - engage with customers on a personal level

  • Promoting the cafe on social media

  • Food production and preparation

Rooftop Garden (20%):

  • Create and execute succession planting schedule to maximize yield

  • Coordinate crop choices based on cafe needs and what’s culturally appropriate for the community

  • Place seed orders; maintain seed library; start and care for seedlings

  • Weeding, watering, pruning, disease treatment and prevention, natural pesticide solutions

Program Logistics (20%)

  • Supervise administration of Women in the Garden (WIG) Program

  • Organize workshops focused on gardening, health, and wellness

  • Perform outreach to relevant organizations and maintain workshop schedule

  • Facilitate gardening sessions with WIG program participants

  • Assist with program marketing and communications as assigned

Other (10%)

  • Perform program development, research, outreach, and administrative tasks as assigned by Food Security & Garden Programming Coordinator

Must haves:

  • Customer service experience and a friendly, outgoing personality

  • Experience preparing food and coffee in a food service setting

  • High level of baking skill, ideally with vegan baked goods

  • A Food Handler’s Certificate or willingness to obtain one before start date

  • Experience growing organic vegetables, ideally in a rooftop or container garden

  • Experience working with diverse and/or marginalized communities, preferably from an anti-oppression framework

  • Strong commitment to social justice and equality

  • A flexible, can-do attitude and desire to take on a leadership role

  • Skilled in the use of the MS Office Suite, Google Docs and social media platforms

  • Flexible schedule, with the ability to work evenings and weekends as required


  • Familiarity with one or more South Asian languages

  • Experience working with a social enterprise or NGO

  • Resident of the local community

  • Experience managing commercial or nonprofit social media accounts

  • Lived experience with food insecurity and/or marginalization

  • Post-secondary education in horticulture, environmental studies, hospitality, or other relevant field
