TEACHING JOBS

Position: Teacher
Organization: Squamish Nature Learners
Location: Squamish, BC

Squamish Nature Learners is a K-5 outdoor environmental school program that runs 3 days a week (Monday to Thursday) from 9 am to 3 pm. This is a homeschool support program that follows a place-based education curriculum (Sobel, Greenwood et al.) where learning is:

  • Experiential
  • Emergent
  • Inquiry-based
  • Play-based

Seeking a teacher with a passion for outdoor teaching and inspiring a life-long love of learning in children. Key qualities are strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work and teach effectively outside. The teacher will be responsible for a class of up 14 multi-aged students, and will be in charge of directing different parent volunteers throughout the year.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • excellent class management and organizational skills
  • lesson planning & outdoor preparation
  • effective communication skills
  • initiative and creativity in implementing a nature-based learning experience for children
  • an openness to professional development

The teacher will also be expected to:

  • follow BC curriculum
  • attend monthly parent meetings
  • communicate about daily routines/plans/activities with parents daily in a professional and expedient manner
  • conduct parent-teacher conferences seasonally
  • attend all school events
  • coordinate First Nations mentors
  • offer homeschool support to parents as needed

Requirements:

  • Must have a BC Teacher Certification
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Outdoor or forest teaching experience of 2 or more years
  • Legal to work in Canada (Canadian citizenship or Permanent Residence)
  • Clear criminal record

Assets:

  • Waldorf or Montessori Training
  • Forest school or place-based education training
  • Experience in multi-age settings
  • A passion for teaching beyond a traditional classroom setting
  • Ability to work with nature as co-teacher (ability to connect and teach lessons on math literacy etc… outside in nature)
  • Understanding of experiential and emergent curriculum.
