SUSTAINABLE & REGENERATIVE FARMING

A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY

Position: Not Your Usual Farm Apprenticeship
Farm: Abbondanza Farm
Location: Eastern Townships, Quebec
Type: includes housing/accom., meals, weekly stipend (see below)
Dates: full-time, April 1 to Oct 15, 2020

ABOUT THE FARM:

Abbondanza is a small but very diverse farm located in the beautiful Eastern Townships of Quebec on the border with Vermont and an hour and half from Montreal.

The farm is situated on a peaceful, secluded piece of land, surrounded by forests. There is an excellent swimming pond and we are close to a river and a lovely lake.

We produce a wide variety of seedlings, vegetables, herbs and small fruit in our fields and greenhouses as well as raising chickens and turkeys.

And there are expansive ornamental gardens.

In all of my practice I am committed to the preservation of our agricultural heritage and to sustainable, regenerative agriculture.

The farm is also an educational centre offering a series of workshops each season in growing food and living sustainably. http://www.abbondanzafarm.com

For the last several years we have sold our produce at the local farmers market, a market in Montreal, to restaurants in my town as well as in Montreal and through CSA baskets.

Bu this year the farm is transitioning away from production growing and concentrating on the workshops and the educational component of the project.

ABOUT THE WORK AND THE WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is not your average production farm job. I promise that at no point will you be spending the entire day weeding beans.

What I am looking for is someone who can work along side me assisting in the many and varied tasks it takes to run my project.

This will include, but not be limited to:

  • Growing and harvesting seedlings, vegetables, herbs, fruit and flowers. (Okay, there will be some weeding.)
  • Raising poultry.
  • Transforming food.
  • Planning and implementing workshops.
  • Doing social media promotion.
  • Contributing to the running of the local farmers market which I manage.
  • Participating in the tasks required for the smooth running of our collective domestic life .

You will be expected to put in 45-50 hours a week, generally Monday to Friday but also including some Saturday mornings, from April 1 to October 15.

The position includes accommodation on the farm in your own bedroom or cabin, 3 meals a day (The cooking is shared-mostly organic, mostly local not always vegetarian and definitely not vegan.), and a stipend of $200 a week that could be adjusted based on your experience.

There is no smoking in the house, and no pot or alcohol during work hours.

You will have one week paid vacation during the season. Other time away can be negotiated.

There will be a 2 weeks trial period, so each of us can determine if we can work well together.

ABOUT YOU:

I am looking for someone who loves to learn new things.

  • Is good at working independently.
  • Is good at establishing priorities and seeing tasks through.
  • Loves to solve problems.
  • Welcomes a challenge.
  • Is passionate about growing things.
  • Really enjoys living and working collectively.
  • Loves the challenge that farm work provides.
  • Is committed to all aspects of community food security.
  • Likes meeting and communicating with new people.
  • Gets great pleasure from physical work and has the physical ability to carry out farm tasks.
  • Loves animals including poultry and dogs.
  • Has a drivers license.
  • Being bilingual (French-English) is a huge asset but not a requirement.
  • Likes to laugh.

I am very open to people of colour and/or people who identify as queer.

I am also open to the idea of accommodating a couple in this job.

And I would welcome your pursuit of a personal project here such as growing medicinal herbs or producing a specialty food product.

This position could be just the start of a longer partnership.

TO APPLY:

Please send me an email at abbondanzafarm@gmail.com that will tell me:

  • What you hope to gain from this position.
  • How it would fit in with your future plans.
  • Why you imagine this kind of work would be satisfying.
  • The previous experiences work experiences you have had, agricultural and otherwise.
  • Any other relevant skills you may have, carpentry, social media, music…
  • Any details about yourself I should know, including allergies, food preferences, any health issues, including mental health.
