Position: Sustainability Intern

Groundswell Network Society is looking for a Sustainability Intern Summer Student To begin work As Soon As Possible (and no later than June 4th) until August 31st , 2018

Located in the East Kootenays of British Columbia, Groundswell is a non-profit community development organization that promotes community sustainability and resilience through education and by the advancement of innovative projects that result in health for people, the environment and the economy. Our flagship project, Groundswell Community Greenhouse and Permaculture Gardens, boast demonstrations in solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and permaculture installations. Our 1/4 acre property includes a developing food forest, a built wetland, a community garden, a cob oven, among other incredible features. We offer community u-pick on site and sell our produce to local retailers, with support from our volunteer network.

Job Description:

  • The Sustainability Intern assists with garden and greenhouse plant production and food harvesting/packing/preservation and data recording and entry
  • The candidate will welcome and orient visitors including youth, seniors and special needs audiences
  • They will assist with community workshops and educational programming, as well online communications, website upgrades and information booths at community events.
  • A high fitness level, positive attitude and excellent communication skills are essential requirements.
  • Communications and leadership are core skills.

Successful Groundswell Interns:

  • Have strong verbal and writing skills, social media and graphics an asset, particularly website development. Event planning & promotions, media literacy, budgeting, handling money, ensuring health & safety standards are adhered to in all activities. Are self-starters, independent, comfortable with self-direction, problem solving, good time managers, possess a 'service to client' attitude, patience and a sense of humor.

Candidate Requiremements:

This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs Grant.

  • Under 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • Registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year;
  • Intention to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year;
  • Candidates for this position will be post-secondary level students
  • Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act* and;
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations *Foreign students are not eligible.
  • Possess a valid first aid certification

Field of Studies Include:

  • Agricultural studies, Horticultural Environmental Studies, Health and Community Development and all fields related to this position in garden and greenhouse plant production, soil, compost, food harvest, education and community development and outreach.

Wage: $15/hour at 30 hours per week
