Camp Kirk is an overnight camp for children who have Learning Disabilities, ADHD and/or high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder. We strive to build resiliency and strong mental health in our campers by providing a supportive, nurturing and non-competitive environment. Through a positive social experience, we aim to raise self-esteem and develop a sense of belonging.
Camp Kirk staff work as a team to ensure the physical and emotional safety of the campers. The staff sets the tone of the camp and sends the message to the children that they are in a supportive environment where they are free to be themselves and take risks. These are no small tasks that the staff achieve each summer, and working at Camp Kirk may be challenging at time. However, we strive to provide our staff with the support and guidance they need to feel confident and empowered to support the needs of our campers. For this reason, there is no doubt that a summer at Camp Kirk can be an extremely rewarding experience.
The first 10 days of the contract are dedicated to staff training. During this period the staff will receive training in crisis prevention and intervention, behaviour management, empathy, trauma-informed care, and various training on the exceptional needs of our campers.
Counsellors are responsible for the emotional and physical wellbeing of the 6 campers that are in their care. In tandem with a co-counsellor, individuals hired for this position are expected to create a nurturing and supportive environment that meets the specialized needs of individual children, as well as groups of campers.
