Position Title: POP-UP Adventure Playground Play Ranger
Type: summer job / summer student position

Position Type: Full-time, seasonal. 11 weeks with 1 week unpaid holiday in early August.
Position Salary: $14/hour, 30 hours/week


An exciting summer job opportunity exists to join our dynamic team at Earth Day Canada (EDC), a national environmental charity, and participate in supporting our strategic plan to help Canadians connect to nature.

In the spring and summer of 2018, Earth Day Canada will continue its popular EarthPLAY program, producing a series of POP-UP Adventure Playgrounds using “loose parts” to promote self-directed outdoor play for children, ages 2 – 14, in parks and green spaces across the GTHA. While the children build their own playground out of cardboard boxes, duct tape, rope, cable spools, tires, old suitcases and other odds and ends, EDC will engage parents and community organizations in conversation about the benefits of play and play provision. Play-work is a recognized profession in the U.K. EDC’s Play Ranger summer position is intended for youth returning to school full time in September, who are interested in working for children and advancing the play agenda through event planning, community consultations and public education.

Applicants in fields as diverse as child and youth work, early childhood education, outdoor education, arts education, recreational programming, parks planning, urban planning, geography and/or landscape design may have skills and interests to bring to the team.

Play Ranger Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Director of Play Programs and POP-UP Play Project Manager to plan and co-ordinate POP-UP Adventure Days, including materials donations, social media and event promotion
  • Assist with all duties related to delivering POP-UP Adventure Days, including loading and unloading of materials, safety procedures, playwork leadership and outreach with parents on the day of the event
  • Assist with outreach, planning and co-ordination of events
  • Participate in POP-UP playgrounds and training workshops
  • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Create, update and distribute communication, educational and event materials, including flyers, brochures, translations, Facebook and website input, video documentation and editing
  • Assist with various administrative duties and other tasks to support the program and organization


  • Interest and/or experience in working with children in outdoor activities
  • Interest and/or experience in environmental planning for children
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Self-motivated, creative and critical thinker with attention to detail
  • Adaptability, able to work in a variety of conditions
  • Able to lift, carry and organize “loose parts” materials
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills
  • Respect for diverse cultures and ability to work well with people of different social, cultural and educational backgrounds, working within an anti-oppression framework
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, to unload, carry, and stand approximately 5 hours on POP UP days (with breaks)
  • Flexibility regarding assigned working hours, including days, evenings, weekends and holidays required
  • Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check, to be completed prior to start date

Asset Qualifications:

  • Valid G Driver’s License
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR “C”
  • Knowledge of graphics, visual and video documentation software applications
  • Outdoor education/recreation/childcare experience
  • Event planning experience
  • Experience with tools, tinkering, and repairs
  • Ability to speak a second language
