Position: Student Landscape Design

  • Monday 12:30 pm to 8:00 pm                     
  • Tuesday 12:30 pm to 8:00 pm
  • Wednesday 12:30 pm to 8:00 pm
  • Thursday 8:30 am to 4:00 pm
  • Friday 8:30 am to 4:00 pm
  • Every 2nd Sat 8:30 am to 4:00 pm

NOTE: No scheduling Sat & Mon of long weekend. Additional hours may be requested.

Rate of Pay: $16.95/hr

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Working as part of Water Smart Peel with the Public Education and Outreach group, a dynamic team of individuals who are dedicated to providing residents and businesses with information and incentives for reducing water use and protecting the environment, you will provide direct assistance for the Fusion (Eco-friendly) Landscape Program.

Your work term will entail a number of activities, including, but not limited to the following:

  • Providing a detailed eco-friendly landscape design and horticulture suggestions to residents in the Region of Peel (Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga) as part of the Fusion Landscaping Consultation program. Applicants must have experience and an educational background in:
    • Preparing detailed landscape design plans incorporating usage of space, style, terrain, plant requirements and other elements to create a personalized design
    • Conducting a site analysis by looking at different residential situations for elements such as sun/wind exposure, existing plants, slope, access, maintenance requirements, etc. during the consultation process
    • Knowledge of water-efficient gardening, composting, native plants, bio-diversity issues, conservation issues in relation to water efficiency, identification of plants and basic insects, knowledge of beneficial insects and host plants
    • Landscape design theory, plant and hard materials, and landscape construction
    • Knowledge of invasive plantings/insects in the GTA region
    • Basic knowledge of tree I.D. and care for in an urban environment
    • Knowledge of stormwater management practices such as rain gardens, swales, downspout disconnection and permeable pavement would be an asset, but not required
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Excellent organizational, planning and time management skills
    • Able to work independently and as a team member
  • Entering data obtained during consultations into the Water Smart Peel database
  • Assisting with the organization, setup and take down of Fusion garden workshops. Knowledge of the step-by-step process of how to start/build a garden is an asset
  • Performing garden maintenance at eco-demonstration gardens if required
  • Assisting with the organization and staffing of scheduled outreach events
  • Providing excellent customer service in person, on the phone and in writing at all times
  • Other duties as assigned

This position requires a background in Landscape Design and/or Architecture, Horticulture, Environmental Studies or a related discipline, knowledge of common plant species and experience in customer service. Knowledge of water efficiency and/or native plant species is an asset. Working knowledge and experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is essential. Interested candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills, be comfortable communicating with the public, possess a valid Ontario driver’s license, and be able to work independently, outdoors, without supervision in a variety of weather conditions.

Please note that this position requires a valid unrestricted driver’s license (G2 or higher, held for a minimum of 6 months), be comfortable driving on 400 series highways and throughout the Region of Peel and the ability to pass a required Region of Peel driving test.
