Position: Field Data Specialist
Company: Heliolytics
Location: Toronto, Ontario

At Heliolytics we help optimize renewable energy assets by creating innovative tools that are changing the way renewable energy assets are operated and our services actively enable the increased deployment of renewable energy globally. Solar energy systems – our main operational sector – are the fastest growing source of energy globally with installed solar capacity increased by 26% last year.

We manage our full workflow in-house, from collecting imagery data using industry-leading tools and techniques, to providing clear, actionable insights for our clients to make the best decisions possible in the operation of renewable energy assets. We are currently the global leader for aerial inspections of solar arrays, and lead the industry in the development of innovative new technologies and insights.

About the team: Every day is different as our team is responsible for the collection of our in-field imagery data, whether performing the collection themselves or by working with third party providers.

A Field Data Specialist is responsible for overseeing third party aerial surveying providers, across North America and globally. They organize, plan, and run aerial survey missions with the third party providers. They should be comfortable clearly conveying technical information and company needs to the providers. They will need to maintain a high level of organization, priority setting, and have great interpersonal teamwork skills.

A Field Data Specialist is also responsible for our equipment, whether they are overseeing the use of it with third party providers or they are transporting it to sites themselves and operating it to collect in-field datasets. They should be comfortable working intimately with tools and software.

Our clients are international, and the Field Data Specialist will have the opportunity to travel across North America and abroad (pending COVID-19 restrictions).

Things you'll be working on:

  • Coordinating the operations of our data collection system with third party providers
  • Planning field missions and being the logistics point person
  • Operation and maintenance of data acquisition software and hardware
  • Interacting with the rest of the Operations team to ensure smooth and successful missions
  • Organizing and transferring data to data analysis teams
  • Performing data collection from aircraft (when needed)Documenting operations and maintaining clear records
  • Streamlining operations by focusing on continuous improvement

You'll need to be:

  • Operations focused: The success of this position depends on operational excellence. You should love checklists, take pride in being well prepared, and have a proven ability to get things done. A keen understanding of how to triage what’s important and what’s required later is key, as there are frequent obstacles like differing time zones, bad weather, and airspace restrictions that will need to be overcome.
  • Excellent communication skills: A big part of this role is effectively communicating with our providers, our clients, team members and the rest of Heliolytics. Knowing how to succinctly convey critical information to the right people is very important.
  • Technologically proficient: You should show a clear ability to learn and adapt to new software and technologies. Our tools are constantly in flux, and you should be able to keep up with the latest software and hardware, while actively participating in the design of our next generation systems. It would be great if you could give us an example of when you had to solve or work around a technical problem.
  • Interpersonal and teamwork skills: You will be frequently engaging with different personalities while performing this job and you will be required to work with them to ensure successful missions, whether they be coworkers, third party providers, or clients. You should be able to communicate clearly, and empathize with collaborators. The ability to work with a variety of people in stressful situations is key.
  • Able to work autonomously:You get a call from our provider that the system won’t turn on. They are in the Mojave Desert, where it's 40°C. The scan needs to get done today. You need to be able to navigate situations like this will ease as the field work that we perform regularly intersects with Murphy’s Law. You will be expected to learn all the technical aspects of our sensor system, and be able to reliably solve problems in field situations.
  • Able and excited to work in small aircraft: A portion of this position involves taking precise measurements with our proprietary data acquisition tools while in a small aircraft. If you get carsick, seasick or motion sick, this is not the career for you.
  • Ready to travel: This position could involve travel in teams of two to client sites. Does flying around France at 2000 ft above ground sound exciting to you? Is the feeling of accomplishing a successful “mission” or going on an adventure something you strive for? Sometimes flight schedules need to be changed or expedited, but we accommodate Field Data Specialists’ schedules whenever possible. We also cover all costs of travel: accommodations, a sweet cell phone plan, transportation and food. This portion of the position is very limited while COVID-19 restrictions are in place.

It would be great if you had experience with:

  • Management or field operations experience; tell us how you have worked effectively to lead a team to achieve a goal
  • Languages (French, Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin, Hindi, or German are an asset)
  • Programming or advanced spreadsheet knowledge - this position will not require coding, however you will be expected to work closely with our developers to communicate and test improvements to the system
  • An understanding of how to troubleshoot an electrical system

Experience comes in many forms, many skills are transferable, and passion goes a long way. If the job description gets you pumped but your background isn’t exactly what we’ve described above, or if you strongly believe you bring qualifications beyond what we’ve outlined that would help you excel in this position, please consider applying.

We get along well enough that we’ll occasionally have milkshakes or beers together at the end of the day, but we all maintain our own vibrant social lives outside of work.
