Position: Facilities Manager
Organization: Southlands Riding Club
Location: Vancouver, BC

The Riding Club’s Facilities Manager professionally manages the labor, time, materials and financial resources needed to care for the riding surfaces, landscaped grounds and other facilities of the Club. The Facilities Manager is responsible for the environmental health of the Club grounds, the sporting needs of the horses and riders with an eye toward safety, as well as the sustainability of the Club.

The Facilities Manager is responsible for communicating the status of the grounds and maintenance resources to Club management, board of directors, committees, riders, vendors, suppliers, equestrian professionals and others in the riding industry. The Facilities Manager’s management strategies must align with the Club’s environmental and philanthropic role in the community.

The Facilities Manager carefully monitors natural weather patterns, environment and other influences that affect the riding surfaces and landscapes with which riders and horses interact. The Facilities Manager monitors the health of the riding surfaces and landscaped environment through careful study, diagnosis and treatment of the track, rings, polo/grand prix field and naturalized areas and trees. Their skilled management of the Club’s facilities is accomplished through a detailed knowledge of equestrian footing, agriculture and plant pathology. 

The Facilities Manager has a love of the outdoors and working in a natural setting, pays careful attention to details, and the capacity to work in a respectful manner with management and membership. This physically active role requires some heavy lifting, use of motorized machinery including tractors and mowers, use of woodworking equipment (drills, saws, etc.) and working with materials such as fertilizers, paints, etc. The ability to be flexible with respect to working hours and conditions is mandatory; the position duties and responsibilities – as well as working hours - vary from season-to-season, and are based upon special events such as horse shows, clinics, etc.


  1. The Facilities Manager is in charge of ensuring all areas of the Club and surrounding property are safe, clean an in keeping with the expectation of a private equestrian facility. Working with part-time and/or contractual staff, the Facilities Managers creates a schedule to ensure optimal conditions for members utilizing the facility. This includes:
    1. Daily grooming and watering (where necessary) of riding rings and surfaces;
    2. Field, lawn, and tree/shrub care
    3. Repairs and maintenance of facilities including fences, irrigation, lighting, minor woodworking projects, painting, planting, well as tractors and equipment as per manufacturer recommendations
  2. The Facilities Manager will work collaboratively with the Club’s General Manager to create a budget – for Board approval - that includes part-time and contractual personnel, grounds maintenance and improvements, capital expenses and special projects.
  3. The Facilities Manager will seek opportunities for the Club to benefit from its position as part of the province’s agricultural land reserve (ALR) and as a not-for-profit organization. This includes seeking grants and other funding opportunities that are of financial benefit to the Club.
  4. The Facilities Manager will oversee all part-time and contractual staff, as well as vendors, involved in grounds-related projects and work. This includes creating a schedule to ensure daily tasks are completed in the Facilities Managers absence; providing direction, objectives and expectations for persons working on the Club’s property; evaluating staff and vendor performance.


Five (5) years of experience in caring for grounds/facilities required (landscaping, equestrian or golf club grounds crew, property management, farming, etc.). Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a field related to agriculture, horticulture or equestrian sciences. People-management experience required. Proficiency in Microsoft suite. Basic woodworking skills required; advanced preferred. Must have a valid driver’s license in the province of BC.
