Position: Program Manager
Organization: Park People
Work location: We will consider candidates based in Montreal, Vancouver or Toronto, and are open to a blend of remote and in-person days in a typical work week.

In this role, you will join Park People’s management team to spearhead an ambitious new national program stream, working with partners to realize the potential of large urban green spaces to contribute to climate change adaptation and bolster the environmental and social resilience of Canada’s big cities.

This permanent position's role will evolve over time. The first six months (Jan to June 2021) will be focused on launching a major, multi-city project with on-the-ground partners in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal to bring nature-based solutions to climate change to three large urban parks. This is a new project with potential for growth and expansion within the three cities and to other parts of the country. Once the project is up and running, your focus will shift to include supervising and coaching a team of staff delivering a broader portfolio of projects in Toronto and across Canada.

Behind the scenes, you will share the responsibility of broadening the programming funding base to ensure that our core work as well as new projects are sustainable over time. We are looking for a collaborative leader with strong strategic acumen who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. You must be comfortable delivering programs by mobilizing a team of staff and partners, while keeping a constant eye and acting on opportunities for growth, including new funding and partnerships.

As Program Manager, your role will include:

Program Management and Planning:

  • Working collaboratively with the management team to set long and short-term priorities, and staffing and budget plans to meet goals
  • In tandem with the Managing Director and Director of Programs, overseeing strategic program and partnership development for Park People’s programs and projects
  • Ensuring projects and programs are integrated and supporting the organization’s mission and values
  • Developing and providing oversight of program budgets including quarterly reviews

Program Design and Development:

  • Building program partnership opportunities, including initial relationship development to project development, collaborative funding proposals, and contract negotiations
  • Developing sustainable programs with diverse funding sources
  • Maintaining positive relationships with funders, including submitting timely reports and attending funder events

Team leadership:

  • Building a healthy team culture of collaboration, accountability and ongoing learning; ensure the team is working in an integrated and mutually-supportive environment; ensure roles have clear responsibilities and effective work processes
  • Performance management, coaching and professional development for all direct reports
  • Interviewing and selecting staff, orienting, training, and coaching team members; ensuring Health and Safety protocols are in place for team

The skills and experience you bring to the role include:

  • Ability to identify potential partners and strengthening existing relationships, representing the organization with programming partners and funders and providing leadership to collaborative initiatives
  • Strong people management and leadership skills including: delegation, project management, prioritization, strengths based coaching and mentoring.
  • An effective promoter of people who understands the importance of developing the skills, knowledge and abilities of direct reports; manages work, project plans and outcomes effectively
  • 3-5 years of experience in management roles and leading a multi-person staff team
  • Understanding program design and impact
  • Bilingualism is a very strong asset for the role - but under special circumstances we would consider strong Anglophone applicants. Please be clear about your English and French language skills in your application
  • A cross-Canada perspective: Demonstrated capacity to plan and operate programs in multiple jurisdictions, taking into account different cultural, linguistic and regulatory contexts
  • Demonstrated understanding of budgeting, forecasting and analysis of budget vs. actual expenditures
  • Demonstrated fundraising experience including proposal and report writing and relationship management
  • Analytical and written skills, including the effective design and compelling description of programs

  • Getting Work Done Through Others — an effective promoter of people who understands the importance of developing the skills, knowledge and abilities of direct reports; manages work, project plans and outcomes effectively

Starting Salary Range: $60,000-70,000

Anticipated Start Date: January 2021
