Funded Masters Position in community-based research and participatory planning, beginning Sept 2018

Position: Funded Masters position in participatory planning & community-based research

We are accepting applications and expressions of interest for one masters position to help evaluate NeighbourPlan, a participatory planning project being led by Peterborough GreenUp.

Your community-driven research project will be co-designed by the graduate student and the NeighbourPlan project evaluation committee, with support from Trent faculty members. Students will be expected to support community meetings and activities alongside their research so as to fully embed themselves in the project.

Funding will come from a combination of a Trent University Graduate Teaching Assistantship (ca. 14K/yr) and a Summer Research Fellowship (ca. 7k/yr) provided by Peterborough GreenUp. Additional financial support, such as scholarships or bursaries, may also be available through direct application to the Graduate Studies Department at Trent University. Students will be able to also connect and work with faculty and students involved with the Community First: Impacts of Community Engagement (CFICE) SSHRC-CURA grant (

Ideal candidates will have a solid academic track record, have a strong record of community involvement and interest, be an independent self-starter, and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Skills and experience in environmental studies, urban studies, active transportation, GIS, and planning would be helpful.

You’ll be immersed in a highly interdisciplinary environment, working in close contact with faculty and community partners. Students must be eligible for admission to the Masters of Arts in Sustainability Studies at Trent University.
