Occasional Instructor — Elementary and Secondary Outdoor Environmental Education

The Riverwood Conservancy (TRC) is looking for Occasional Outdoor Environmental Education Instructors to teach and further develop Education Naturally and L.E.A.D.S. (Leaders in Environmental Achievement though Diversity and Skills), our elementary and secondary school, curriculum-linked outdoor education programs at Riverwood.

Reporting to the Executive Director through the Education Naturally Teacher and the L.E.A.D.S. Instructor, the successful candidate will be responsible to deliver programs to students from grades Kindergarten to Grade 12.

The Occasional Instructor supervises volunteers from diverse background to support the Education Naturally and L.E.A.D.S programs and liaises with the Education Naturally Teacher and L.E.A.D.S Instructor on all volunteer matters.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of natural history, and an understanding of science methodology and appropriate teaching pedagogy. The candidate will possess demonstrable teaching skills, a strong work ethic and be comfortable in the out-of-doors.

Position primary responsibilities:

  • Deliver Education Naturally, elementary (K-8) and L.E.A.D.S. secondary (9-12) field science programs that reflect current Ontario Provincial Ministry of Education guidelines;
  • Supervise and direct volunteers supporting the Education programs;
  • Assist students to organize and analyze their collected field data; contribute to databases for TRCs website;
  • Conduct daily set-up and clean-up of program equipment;
  • Maintain program equipment, aquaria and critters and notify the Education Naturally Teacher or the LEADS Instructor when needing replacement;
  • Support special program for Scouts and Guides when needed;
  • Perform other duties as assigned and as agreed upon

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Able to work on a call-in basis;
  • A current Ontario Certified Teacher certificate is preferred;
  • Experience as an outdoor education teacher or similar field;
  • A degree in science (preference biology/ecology/environmental science) or similar yet versed in myriad fields;
  • A working knowledge of Ontario Provincial Ministry of Education Science Guidelines and curriculum;
  • A naturalist background;
  • Knowledge of field research techniques;
  • Ability to analyze field data and build databased;
  • Experience and willingness to work with volunteers;
  • An ability to think on your feet;
  • A sense of humour combined with strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills;
  • A strong sense of health and safety;
  • The ability to speak publicly and to work with a diverse public;
  • A valid police check or can acquire one ;
  • Training in CPR and first aid;
  • A state of health that allows you to safely lead classes over uneven and hilly terrain and under a variety of weather conditions, including winter programming;
  • Computer skills and a valid D driver’s license is an asset;

Compensation is $150.00 per work day

Duties are to commence as soon as possible.
