OUTDOOR EDUCATION JOBS

Position: Supervisor for Volunteer Counsellors - Outdoor Education Centre
Term: September 2019 to June 2020
Type: Room & partial Board plus $15/hr (average 32-40 hours per program week)
Organization: Cheakamus Centre
Location: Brackendale, BC (near Squamish)

OVERVIEW

The Counsellor Supervisor (CS) supports the Outdoor School program at Cheakamus Centre as well as other educational programs as needed. The primary duties of the CS are to support, mentor and supervise volunteer high school counsellors during the residential Outdoor School program. During each week of Outdoor School, 12-14 high school students volunteer to be counsellors with grade 4 or 6 students, supporting their cabin group throughout the program. The counsellor supervisor should be a highly motivated individual who has an adaptable leadership style to engage and energize youth through being a strong role model, mentor and support. Under the direction of the Environmental Program Coordinator, duties to be undertaken will include being part of a team that creates safe, fun and memorable experiential learning programs for all involved.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist program staff to prepare, supervise and facilitate recreation programming (afternoon & evening programs which may include campfires, games, canoeing, etc.)

  • Assist program team to train, mentor and supervise high school counsellors

  • Occasionally assist with other educational programs at the Cheakamus Centre in a facilitation role

  • Liaising with visiting teachers and program staff regarding any program or student concerns

  • Assist on orientating and training interns

  • Adhering to all institutional employee and technology codes of conduct

  • Maintain Social Media presence, including use for volunteer recruitment

  • Support the production of weekly photo slideshows for presentation and distribution to visiting school groups

  • Liaise with North Vancouver Outdoor School Alumni Society

  • Live on site during Outdoor School programming times and be on call as required

  • Assist with counsellor feedback, evaluation summaries, and performance reviews

  • Assist with the coordination and facilitation of special events

  • Other duties as required

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • First Aid Certificate – OFA Level 1

  • Willing to submit a current Criminal Record Check, with Vulnerable Sector Check

  • Experience working with children and/or youth in outdoor educational setting

  • Experience leading outdoor recreation activities

  • Experience training and mentoring youth

  • Strong interest in developing leadership skills

  • Works effectively independently and in a collaborative team environment

  • Ability to work varied hours including evenings and occasional weekends

  • Friendly, positive and enthusiastic approach

  • Strong communication skills

  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, and slideshow creation)

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with overnight educational programming or camp leadership programs

  • Knowledge or familiarity of the Outdoor School program, and its mission, vision, values and goals

  • Knowledge or familiarity with NVOS Alumni Society and its mission, vision, values and goals

  • Experience with using social media for professional purposes an asset

  • Strong interest in West Coast ecology and its natural & cultural history

  • Valid driver’s license preferred

COMPENSATION

Room & partial Board plus $15/hr (average 32-40 hours per program week)

Note: meals are only provided during programming periods.

Schedule is based on program bookings.
