Position: Board Member
Type: board of directors position / unpaid
Organization: Community Micro Lending
Location: Greater Victoria, BC

Community Micro Lending is seeking candidates passionate about access to entrepreneurship to join the board of directors.

Those interested in contributing in time-limited ways to the work of the organization are also encouraged to apply for volunteer roles in our working groups.

About Community MIcro Lending

Community Micro Lending is a non-profit society serving Victoria, BC. Since 2009, we have worked to connect local entrepreneurs with the resources, training and support they need to start or expand community-scale enterprise.

We do this through two main streams: facilitating peer-to-peer microloans between community members and providing inclusive financial literacy and business development training programs.

Our clients face intersectional barriers to accessing traditional avenues of support and staff and volunteers work hard to meet them where they’re at and to connect them with the value of their skill, effort and creativity. We approach our efforts with the intention of growing client confidence and connecting them with the skills, knowledge and resources they need to bring ideas to life. Through this work, we aim to build thriving, resilient communities one entrepreneur at a time.

Who we’re looking for

Nationally, there is a federally-driven expansion of investment in social enterprise. In an effort to develop the capacity to best deliver our impact and learn from the past 10 years of community work, the organization is undertaking a period of business development, including the development of revenue-generating social enterprise.

To join us in this hard work, we are looking for candidates with:

  • Experience contributing to the development of early-to-mid stage social purpose organizations, including for-profit enterprise
  • Experience with or knowledge of current approaches to impact investing and microfinance domestically and abroad
  • Experience with or knowledge of approaches to social enterprise incubation
  • Experience with the development of programs and services that robustly engage an intersectional and decolonial approach

We are especially seeking candidates with specific experience in any of the following areas:

  • Financial — particularly experience with structuring products and navigating regulatory frameworks
  • Fund development — particularly raising capital and securing sponsorship among other activities
  • Project management — particularly experience with the building and testing of pilot products and services
  • Tech/web development — particularly experience with financial technology and/or crowdfunding platforms and compliance with privacy and accessibility legislation

Experience or knowledge in directors' and officers' liability, compliance issues, and contracts and agreements are preferred but not required.
