Position: Media Manager
Organization: World Animal Protection
Location: Toronto, Ontario

World Animal Protection is a global animal welfare organization, working in over 50 countries around the world. Our vision is a world where animals live free from suffering. We protect animals because we believe a sustainable future for the planet can only be achieved if both animals and people are part of the solution. We are seeking a talented and passionate individual to join our Communications team as we work to move the world to protect animals. World Animal Protection is seeking a Media Manager.

Reporting to the Communications Director, the Media Manager will be an experienced, collaborative and enthusiastic self-starter. They will play a key role in developing and driving World Animal Protection’s media communications activity in Canada.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver an annual media plan with clear performance targets
  • Build brand awareness through strategically placed stories in mainstream and influential media outlets
  • Write media kits, media pitches, press releases, blog posts, key messages, authored articles and briefing documents for spokespeople 
  • Pitch and place media across various channels to generate growing volume of media hits in local market
  • Contribute content to local online properties including website and social media channels
  • Develop and nurture excellent relationships with journalists and influencers in all forms of media
  • Measure and evaluate media performance and deliver reports on achievements 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in media engagement, securing key placements, building profile in the media
  • 3+ years of experience setting, executing and evaluating media engagement strategies 
  • Demonstrated experience using traditional tools (press, networking etc) as well as new tools (social media, twitter, blogs etc) to maximize media coverage and awareness
  • Previous experience liaising with journalists and an understanding of the media landscape in Canada
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to tailor the communication style to the audience 
  • A strong understanding and experience of media metrics and reporting 
  • Ability to translate strategic objectives into practical and achievable plans that are sensitive to the needs to various stakeholders and partners 
  • Proven ability to work under pressure, managing competing priorities and tight deadlines
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; fluency in written and spoken French considered major asset
  • Collaborative team player 
  • Knowledge of animal welfare issues
  • Experience working in an international non-government organization or charity
