Nuxalk Stewardship Office – Lands Manager

Position: Lands Manager
Organization: Nuxalk Nation
Location: Nuxalk Territory, Bella Coola, BC


The Nuxalk Stewardship Office works directly with Nuxalk Stataltmc (hereditary) in the management of natural resources in our traditional territory. Nuxalk affirms our sovereignty, right to maintain and protect our resources, and establish Nuxalk Aboriginal rights and title.

Primary Duties:

  • Facilitating internal and external collaboration and project partners including: other First Nations, governments and other industry organizations
  • Lead the completion of Nuxalk Land Use Plan and implementation of Coastal First Nation and Nuxalk Stewardship policies
  • Support Nuxalk in seizing opportunities within Conservancies with BC Parks;
  • Review multiple land and water development applications to prioritize and track responses;
  • Increasing governance performance, manage work plans, and budgets
  • Represent Nuxalk Stewardship Office at various meetings as required (may include travel)
  • Carry-out community engagement on lands & forest stewardship

Minimum qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary natural resource (or related study) degree or diploma or combination five-years’ experience in natural resource management, referral management, or planning
  • Multi-party communication engagement in landscape or watershed planning
  • Influencing the recognition of Aboriginal Rights within the Coastal First Nation Reconciliation Agreement, including the Great Bear Land Use Order
  • Well organized, self-motivated, strong written, communication and dispute skills
  • Experience with project management and report writing
  • Computer skills, including familiarity with referral software, MS Word, PowerPoint, & Excel

Additional assets:

  • Skills supporting the revitalization Aboriginal governance and laws, and traditional ecological knowledge with our Ancestral Governance department
  • Ability to work with professionals or technical advisors on landscape reserve design and eco-based management processes
  • Experience working in remote communities
  • Ability to work in a digital environment to track referral responses using map tools such as ArcGIS
  • Influencing reconciliation processes among First Nations, stakeholders, and government agencies

Position details:

  • Full Time position – strong potential for long-term position pending strong performance evaluation
  • Wage – negotiable
  • Reports directly to Stewardship Director and work within the Stewardship Office, and close collaboration without our Stewardship team is valued
