Position: Education and Communications Coordinator
Organization: East Kootenay Invasive Species Council
Reporting to: Program Manager
Term: Full-time April 1 through September 30 (35 hrs/wk), part time through winter (October 1 through March 31 (approx. 14 hrs/wk)) depending on funding.
Wage: $22-24/hr (DOE) + 4% vacation pay, mileage rates, and other benefits
Location: Home office based anywhere within Regional District of East Kootenay (Cranbrook/Kimberley preferred).

The East Kootenay Invasive Species Council (EKISC) is an environmental non-profit organization with the mission to mitigate the negative environmental, social, and economic impacts of invasive species. EKISC has a variety of programs, initiatives, and partnerships regarding invasive species management and outreach. 3. JOB SUMMARY
The Education and Communications Coordinator will coordinate education activities to raise public awareness on the impacts of invasive species within the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK). The Coordinator will follow and refine a detailed short- and long-term education workplan regarding various outreach and education programs and will lead a crew of 1-2 summer students as they deliver programming on aquatic and terrestrial invasive species identification, impacts, management options, and restoration techniques. The coordinator and crew will travel across the region to represent EKISC at various events, set up outreach booths, educate the public about invasive species identification and management, and distribute information. Administrative duties will include crew supervision, event planning, and developing and distributing outreach resources, workshops, and presentations. This position will promote EKISC to potential partners and maintain existing relationships through regular and diverse communications.
The Education and Communications Coordinator is responsible for conveying EKISC’s messaging, needs, and news to public, government, media, stakeholder, and private groups via education, outreach, and marketing. This position creates strategies to increase awareness, coordinates the delivery of education and outreach programs, facilitates relationships with potential and existing partners, monitors and analyzes various media channels, trains and supervises staff for various programs and presentations, and creates and develops promotional materials. The Coordinator will review and refines short- and long-term education and communication plans in order to maintain a clear vision and direction for EKISC’s educational, outreach programs and marketing materials.
4. TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
a) Implements education and communication yearly work plans in accordance with EKISC’s longterm vision and strategic goals.
b) Coordinates all aspects of the education and outreach needs including: event scheduling, program delivery, facilitating webinars, resource distribution, coordinated programming, and curriculum development.
c) Evaluates and monitors the education and outreach programming, reporting on successes/ challenges and identifying and establishing new programming when necessary.
d) Establishes and maintains partnerships with stewardship groups, communities, ranchers, First Nations, industries, regional invasive species organizations, and other groups.
e) Maintains EKISC’s communication needs including: creating marketing and promotional resources for all departments of EKISC, updating and monitoring website and social media streams, developing and distributing regular newsletters, media releases, and invasive species related documents, managing membership and partner lists, and liaising between EKISC and media to maintain a clear communication to the public.
f) Manage administrative aspects of the education and communications needs including: Training new employees, facilitating meetings with members, directors and the general public, keeping EKISC tools and resources inventoried, assist with recruiting and hiring education assistants, writing year-end reports and summaries, and ensuring the brand of EKISC remains consistent.
g) Read, understand, and abide by the EKISC Employee Handbook which includes health and safety practices and emergency procedures.
h) Assist other EKISC staff with other duties as required.
i) Support the operations of EKISC as a not-for-profit organization.
5. SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
The Education and Communications Coordinator must fulfill the following requirements:
a. Education and/or professional work experience in Education.
b. Education and/or professional work experience in Marketing and Communications.
c. Comfortable and adept at communicating and presenting both in-person and through written communication mediums with a broad range of audiences.
d. Experience working with a variety of educational delivery methods such as outdoor and
classroom presentations, digital learning, and interpretive performances.
e. Proficiency in preparing technical and professional documents, reports, and articles.
f. Proficient in developing and composing news stories, articles, press releases, technical reports, and promotional material for EKISC and their operations.
g. Experience supervising staff.
h. Effective use of social media platforms; online marketing and design programs such as Wix, Canva, MailChimp; and MS Office.
i. Candidate must be self-motivated, creative, highly organized, able to work as a team, and have excellent communication skills.
6. ADDITIONAL ASSETS & REQUIREMENTS:
a. General knowledge of regional native and invasive species (terrestrial and aquatic).
b. Experience in environmental education.
c. Experience or interest in the natural sciences (biology, ecology, conservation, resource management, forestry, etc.).
d. First Aid certification (can be obtained after hire).
e. Flexibility to work on weekends, holidays, and some evenings.
f. Ability to legally work in Canada.
g. Ability to work from a home office (computer/phone/internet).
h. Criminal record check (including vulnerable sector check) will be required upon hire.
i. Valid BC Drivers Licence in good standing or equivalent.
j. Use of a reliable personal vehicle with at least $2,000,000 extended liability insurance.
