Position: Director of Operations
Organization: Strawberry Isle Marine Research Society

Role Overview

Strawberry Isle Marine Research Society (SIMRS) is a small non-profit operating in Tofino B.C.; reporting to the Board of Directors and working with volunteers, interns and students, the Director of Operations will oversee the daily operations of the non-profit including planning and developing the organization’s programs, activating and managing education, research and monitoring projects and sourcing new funding opportunities.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: grant writing, fundraising, daily administrative duties, conducting field work, entering/analyzing data, creating communication documents, maintaining social media platforms and developing and delivering educational programs and scientific monitoring projects. Applicants should be familiar with marine life of the Pacific North West, (in particular Killer Whales and marine mammals) and have experience conducting scientific monitoring projects. Excellent organizational, problem solving, multi-tasking and communication skills are required, as well as comfort speaking in public to a wide range of audiences.


  • Responsible for daily operations, administrative duties, budgeting, invoicing and communications
  • Development, implementation and analysis of biological monitoring projects and educational programs
  • Coordination and management of volunteers, interns and summer students
  • Preparation of communication materials that encourage marine stewardship and awareness
  • Successfully develop effective, lasting relationships and collaborative partnerships with funders, stakeholders and other agencies (including government, NGO’s, donors, community members and businesses)
  • Succinctly and effectively communicate scientific findings to a wide range of audiences
  • Grant writing and sourcing other funding opportunities
  • Development and adherence to budgets
  • Facilitate the planning, scheduling and delivery of educational programs about Killer Whales and marine mammals at schools, markets and festivals (requires travel throughout B.C)
  • Oversee organization Board and committee meetings, and preparation of Annual Report


  • Bachelor degree (minimum) in natural sciences, biology and/or environmental education (preference to those with experience/knowledge of marine mammals, Killer Whales and species at risk in BC)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Organized and thorough, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects at once
  • Computer skills in Word, Excel, ArcGIS, and basic graphic design programs
  • Database management
  • Previous grant writing experience


  • Previous experience working with children of all ages
  • Collaborative spirit, enjoyment of working and communicating with others, with the ability to be self-guided and independent
  • Comfortable public speaking, delivering presentations and improvising
  • Passion for environmental research, education and protection and the ability to convey that passion to an audience
  • Previous administrative experience
  • Outgoing and engaging personality
  • Familiarly with whale watching industry and Department of Fisheries and Oceans regulations
