FARMING APPRENTICESHIP

Position: Farm Apprenticeship
Type: full room & board and lots of learning is in exchange for labour
Organization: Niagara Escarpment Organics
Location: Southern Georgian Bay, Ontario (near Kimberley/Grey County/Beaver Valley/Thornbury/Collingwood)

This is a unique apprenticeship opportunity for the right individual. I have a really special small mixed farm in probably one of the province's most desireable lifestyle locations, southern Georgian Bay. 20 minutes to Thornbury, Meaford, Collingwood of Blue Mountain Village, the farm is set just outside the artsy village of Kimberley.

The small but productive farmstead is a true oasis: 1/2 acre pond, forest gardens, small flocks of chickens, ducks and 4 goats (with more on the way; we plan to be milking a couple goats this summer and hopefully making cheese). I have three bee hives but looking to expand, about an acre of perennial gardens featuring medicinal and culinary herbs; hoping to dry and sell these for tea business. Some vegetable production, fruit trees, berry bushes. Small greenhouse (with starts already on the go) and a bunkie for you to reside in. It really is a perfect situation for an intern looking for a real hands-on learning experience. Expect to work hard, but in a fun and balanced way with opportunities to run with your own interests at times. Full room & board and lots of learning is in exchange for labour.

You must be responsible, reliable and eager to get involved in all aspects of the farm. Marketing focus will be farm gate sales and some other local retail outlets. Household responsibilities come with the job and you will share in these general cooking/cleaning duties along with me. I have two young kids whom live with me very part-time, but when they are here they will take up much of my time. I may also work off the farm occasionally and need to be able to rely on someone to hold the fort; young LGD (Great Pyrennes/St Bernard/Austrailian Sheppard mix) on site will also be a going concern, but will help with livestock :) Opportunities to tour and workshare at other area farms as well. Not a formal CRAFT farm, though I have been involved with this program in the past and myself interned at Everdale Farm in 2004. More of my bio can be found on my website and LinkedIn Profile; pictures of the farm and my kids on Instagram as well. You will notice from my Twitter and Facebook pages that I am also an activist, with particular interest in the Health Freedom and Beyond Pesticide movements, which I see as inter-related and essential underlying issues in social and environmental justice. I like intelligent conversation and hope you do to.

At this stage I don't drink or smoke of any kind...so probably better if you don't either. I eat mainly vegetarian but meat on occasion. I produce lots of eggs and am now quite fond of raw goats milk...hopefully you would be too. Very into permaculture, wild eddibles and plant based nutrition/herbal medicine.

Other questions, comments, concerns...please don't hesitate to ask. Communication is critical and I hope you will be able to communicate well and I expect nothing less from myself. Look forward to hearing from you – lets make this an awesome season!
