Position: Catch the RAIN Coach - Landscape Design Services

Organization: Green Venture

Duration: 6 Month Contract - Mid March 2019 to Mid September 2019

Location: Hamilton and Dundas, Ontario

Reports to: Green Venture Program Manager

Catch the RAIN, Dundas Project Summary

Catch the Rain, Dundas will provide an opportunity to reduce the impact of urban stormwater pollution in the Hamilton Harbour/Lower Spencer Creek watershed. With the collective action of community members, we will implement green stormwater infrastructure techniques through a series of homeowner projects such as rain gardens, permeable pavers and bioswales to capture and filter stormwater runoff, transforming Dundas neighbourhoods to be more beautiful, flood-resistant and sustainable.

Position Summary

The Catch the RAIN Coach will work with Dundas homeowners to educate them on the advantages of incorporating green infrastructure techniques to their property. Within this 6 month contract the Coach’s primary responsibility will be to schedule and deliver consultations and landscape design plans to Dundas community members. The secondary responsibility will be to deliver green infrastructure workshops to homeowners and attend public outreach events in the Dundas area with Green Venture staff. The ideal candidate will have effective communication skills to be able to provide guidance to homeowners on ways to incorporate green infrastructure on their property, garden with nature, address drainage problems and/or desired landscape solutions in a clear, understandable and relatable way.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Attend training at Green Ventures EcoHouse on Green Communities Canada RAIN Community Solutions program, stormwater best-practices and green infrastructure implementation.
  • Prepare and facilitate design workshops to help homeowners identify green infrastructure options for their property, where best to put them, and other considerations to make their projects successful.
  • Participate in community engagement events to educate and engage Dundas locals on urban stormwater pollution and green infrastructure techniques.
  • Assist in creating a consistent outline for homeowner site visits
  • Conduct site visits of residential properties and suggest options to homeowners on how to improve stormwater management through green infrastructure. Provide homeowners with a detailed design plan.
  • Participate in meetings and other activities to potentially grow the RAIN Coach service

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • A degree or diploma in a related field (landscape architecture, landscape design, engineering, hydrogeology) or equivalent work and/or volunteer experience
  • Experience is residential landscape design
  • Extensive knowledge of urban stormwater issues, green infrastructure and best management practices
  • Proficiency in the use of computer programs:
    • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel)
    • Google suite, and internet
  • Effective communications skills: written, verbal, and listening
  • Effective time management skills
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
  • Valid “G” license and access to personal vehicle
  • Valid First Aid Certification would be an asset

Working Conditions

  • Flexible part-time schedule, Monday to Sunday, working mainly during weekdays, although some evening work is required.
  • Days of work are at the discretion of the employee as discussed with the Program Manager.
  • Ability to work from home with expectation to attend meetings in the office or teleconference when appropriate.
  • Provide own laptop, telephone service and transportation.
