Position: Species Protection Coordinator
Organization: Georgia Strait Alliance
Location: Lower mainland or Vancouver Island, British Columbia
The Strait of Georgia is home to over 3000 species including the world’s largest octopus, 100 year-old rockfish, vast schools of herring and salmon, millions of birds, seals, sea lions, dolphins and whales. However, the region that is an inspiration for millions of people who live here is under increasing pressure from urban expansion, pollution, and habitat destruction, and the impacts of growing use of these waters has resulted in many species being under threat. The fact that there are now 125 marine species at-risk in the region indicates that the ecosystem is in increasing trouble – meaning that we are all in trouble, as wildlife such as killer whales, salmon, basking sharks and shorebirds are indicators of the health of the planet and the future of all species, including humans.
Georgia Strait Alliance is continuing its role as a leader in advocating for better protection of species at risk in the Salish Sea, including the iconic Southern Resident killer whales, and advocating for marine planning and protection of this unique and threatened ecosystem.
