Position: Assistant Environmental Technician, Wildlife
Type: Full-Time Position
Organization: Toronto and Region Conservation Authority
Location: Woodbridge/Vaughan/GTA, Ontario

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Senior Project Manager, Restoration Projects (Waterfront and Wildlife), and under the guidance of the Environmental Technologist, Special Projects, the Assistant Environmental Technician, Wildlife is responsible for the coordination and implementation of TRCA’s wildlife habitat enhancement and management projects and programs including Canada Goose management, nest box program, targeted wildlife habitat, species at risk habitat and wildlife conflicts. Overall, this position contributes to the strategic plan objectives, improving protection of water quality and aquatic ecosystem health.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in fish and wildlife management, ecology, environmental studies or related discipline; or equivalent knowledge.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience related to major tasks.
  • Boating experience.
  • Practical field experience.
  • Experience working in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Experience using small tools and equipment and wood working related equipment.
  • Knowledge of urban wildlife ecology and management including expertise in Canada Goose, beaver and coyote ecology and management.
  • Excellent data collection and analytical skills with attention to detail.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Fish and wildlife identification skills.
  • Wildlife handling skills.
  • Knowledge of breeding bird ecology and management for local species, including waterfowl and waterbird ecology, as well as cavity nesting ecology.
  • Knowledge of species at risk habitat requirements for local species and familiarity with the Endangered Species Act, the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and the Migratory Birds Convention Act.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive wildlife issues and deal with the public tactfully.
  • Effective problem solving skills and leadership skills including staff supervision.
  • Excellent computer proficiency with software experience (MS Excel, Word, ArcMap).
  • Ortho photo interpretation skills.
  • Advanced GPS abilities.
  • Valid Ontario G driver’s licence.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Search out by foot or boat and ethically manage Canada Goose nests within designated parklands and waterbodies of partner municipalities.
  2. Undertake monthly waterfowl counts at designated locations across neighboring jurisdictions.
  3. Coordinate Canada Goose relocation activities. Round up and relocate moulting Canada Geese at designated parklands within neighboring jurisdictions.
  4. Coordinate and implement the Habitat for Wildlife program including the identification of appropriate sites for wildlife enhancements that may not be subject to a larger restoration project.
  5. Work with private landowners to install and undertake best management practices for the benefit of wildlife habitat.
  6. Identify, coordinate and deliver enhancements targeted for species at risk through TRCA jurisdiction.
  7. Collect and maintain data related to the deployment and management of habitat wildlife structures.
  8. Collect and analyze data to inform wildlife habitat enhancements and management.
  9. Investigate and respond to situations where wildlife conflict may be interfering with restoration projects, parklands, and public concerns.
  10. Work with restoration opportunities planning team to identify impairments to the natural system that impact ecological function in terms of wildlife habitat, and identify restoration opportunities to address impairments.
  11. Assist with restoration project delivery to ensure targeted wildlife habitat is incorporated and installed as per project design, and best management practices.
  12. Perform other duties as required.
