Positions: Junior and Senior Environmental Technicians
Organization: Nupqu Development Corporation
Location: Cranbrook / Fernie, Kootenay Region, British Columbia

Nupqu Development Corporation is a fast-growing business proudly owned by member bands of the Ktunaxa Nation since 2009. With offices in Cranbrook, and Fernie, BC, Nupqu conducts a wide variety of work: providing professional forestry, environmental, project management, and general labour related consulting services to a number of clients across industries throughout the Ktunaxa Traditional Territory. Due to increasing growth, Nupqu is looking to expand our environmental team capacity by adding highly motivated, organized, and responsible individuals to join our team in a dynamic and rewarding environment.

Nupqu is currently seeking Junior and Senior Environmental Technicians to support new and ongoing environmental projects within the Elk Valley and Kootenay region. These specific roles will include supporting our project managers in conducting field work and provide a supervisory role to other crews. These positions will consist of up to full-time employment and will be managed out of our Fernie office.

To be successful candidates should look to have relevant experience and qualifications as outlined below.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Undertake surface and sampling, waste/soil sampling, and air monitoring;
  • Equipment maintenance & calibration (YSI, Flow Meter, Ground Water Equipment);
  • Assist with fish salvaging/assessments, vegetation/soil surveys, bird/wildlife surveys, environmental inspections, and other environmental contract services;
  • Provide professional and technical support for preparation of Environmental Management Plans, Environmental Protection Plans, Technical Reports, Health Safety Plans, Request for Proposals, etc.;
  • Provide supervision of crews and delegate duties for various field crews;
  • Operate and maintain various vehicles trucks, UTV/ATV, ;
  • Competence with various computer programs, inputting and managing data (MS Office - Excel and Word);
  • Carry out time and materials tracking requirements as directed.

Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to applicants with a post-secondary education in a related field;
  • Experience working on an active open pit mine site, including driving and working under minimal supervision with a proven safety track record.
  • Previous work experience in Environmental Monitoring, Environmental Field Assessments, Survey’s and Technical Report Writing is an asset;
  • Industry certifications such as; electrofishing, swift water training, WHIMIS, First Aid, AST-1, and ATV training is also considered an asset;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Skills

  • Self-motivated and safety oriented team player in a dynamic environment;
  • Prior experience working as a consultant in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience with mining operations and working on or under permit/EA obligations in an environmental capacity.
  • Ability to supervise various crews & provide leadership to technical staff.
  • Working knowledge of various field sampling including water quality, fish handling/salvaging, BMP`s, equipment calibration, and QA/QC.
  • Field data collection experience related to field surveying, environmental monitoring and/or data acquisition.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with various
  • Proven attention to detail in conducting field work, including note taking and writing.
