Seeking: Maintenance Assistant
Reports to: Maintenance Coordinator
Organization: Real Food for Real Kids
Location: East end Toronto (Lake Shore Blvd E / Port Lands)

Hours: Full Time - Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm


  • $20-$22/hr, dependent on experience
  • RRSP matching

A glimpse at the role:

The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and efficiency of RFRK’s building systems and equipment by prioritizing and safely performing various installation, repair, and maintenance work.

Some of the things you’ll get paid to do:

  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance work and repair building elements (heating, cooling, ventilating, plumbing, and electrical systems) and equipment, or make recommendations for corrective actions and/or required repairs
  • Perform daily checks, tests, and measurements on facility equipment and systems to ensure proper operation and calibration
  • Perform painting, carpentry and masonry work
  • Read and interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics, and code specifications to ensure proper installation,repair, and maintenance of equipment, systems, and building structure
  • Monitor and maintain all building systems as assigned, including troubleshooting various equipment and facility related issues
  • Assist in pest control activities; assemble and move equipment and furniture; yard maintenance;
  • Follow safety procedures such as Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space, PPE, etc. and ensure all work is in compliance with GMPs, HACCP, Health & Safety, WHMIS, and local electrical codes
  • Maintain various records related to maintenance, labor, materials and work orders

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Professional trade experience in one or more of the following areas: HVACR, plumbing, electrical, millwright, industrial maintenance
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite and/or Google Drive
  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • Previous exposure to quality, food safety and health & safety best practices
  • Experience in medium to large scale production/warehouse/industrial environment
  • Valid Ontario G-Class driver’s license

Skills and Personal Attributes:

  • Detail oriented and commitment to accuracy and quality of work
  • Excellent prioritization skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively, to understand and escalate issues as necessary
  • Ability to be proactive, take initiative and troubleshoot problems
  • Adaptability, willingness to grow, and proven aptitude for continuous learning
  • Ability to identify opportunities for cost and inventory reductions
  • Ability to manage projects and to meet deadlines
  • Familiarity with fasteners as well as hand and power tools
  • Ability to work with minimum of supervision
  • Approachable and professional


  • Previous exposure to a HACCP working environment
  • Inventory control management accreditation or designation
  • Trade license/certificate
  • Experience with commercial/industrial food processing equipment
  • Warehouse equipment/lift truck certification
