Position: Data Specialist
Contract: full-time contract through to Sept 30, possibility of extension
Organization: Swim Drink Fish Canada
Location: Toronto, Ontario

Swim Drink Fish Canada is looking for a Data Specialist who loves converting scientific information into information that is easily understood and used by the general public. This includes water quality monitoring results and geographic information and maps. The Data Specialist will focus on finding, organizing, and presenting data about the Great Lakes for the new Great Lakes Guide platform.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Find authoritative and open GIS datasets that can help to educate and inform Ontarians about the Great Lakes and surrounding watershed

  • Work with the datasets to create resources for our design and engineering team to incorporate into the Great Lakes Guide web platform

  • Ensure that recreational water quality information for beaches in the Great Lakes region is accurate and up to date throughout the swimming season (via the Swim Guide platform). This includes adding or updating beaches in the Great Lakes region and verifying water quality monitoring practices in municipalities around Ontario
  • Use data to generate reports about the Great Lakes environmental health that may be of interest to Great Lakes Guide users

Mandatory Experience/Qualifications:

  • Experience manipulating GIS datasets and familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ESRI’s ArcGIS)

  • Sufficient knowledge of Great Lakes watershed, ecology, basic hydrology to be able to determine when datasets are inaccurate, out of date, or missing information

  • Experience doing similar work and/or post-secondary training in a relevant area of study

  • A keen attention to detail

  • A team player, with a positive attitude

  • An independent problem-solver

  • Familiarity with water quality standards and monitoring protocols

  • Familiarity with government open data policies and portals

  • Knowledge of First Nations territories, place names, etc.

Contract Terms:

  • Contract: Full-time contract through to September 30th, 2018 with possibility of contract extension.
  • Start Date: Available immediately
  • Location: Our office is located in downtown Toronto
