Tommy Thompson Park Environmental Field Labourers will work as a team primarily to implement the 2018 Cormorant Management Strategy at Tommy Thompson Park. Teams will encourage cormorant ground nesting and will deter cormorants from expanding their tree nesting range into previously un-nested trees using a suite of deterrent techniques at dawn and/or dusk. Teams will perform nest counts during peak breeding season. TTP Environmental Field Labourers will also assist in other ecological and maintenance projects at TTP (e.g. tree and shrub planting, aquatic planting and invasive vegetation removal, among others). Occupational health and safety is a major responsibility of this position. Must be willing to work flexible hours including morning or evening shifts (days will be 6.5 hour shifts, but start/end time will change throughout the season based on daylight hours) 6 days/week.


  • Post-secondary education in biology, environmental science, resource management or a related field.
  • Experience/aptitude for outdoor activities.
  • Experience working with, or around colonial waterbirds an asset.
  • Familiarity with the Tommy Thompson Park Double-Crested Cormorant Management Plan.
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions and in adverse environments.
  • The ability to identify common flora and fauna found in the GTA.
  • Good physical fitness and strong upper body strength required to perform deterrent activities.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license. Class A(R) an asset.
  • Standard First Aid an asset.
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card an asset.


Perform the following tasks under general supervision:

  1. Monitor nesting activities of Double-crested Cormorants.
  2. Deter cormorants from nesting in designated areas using a suite of techniques including (but not limited to) human presence in the colony, noise makers and nest removal using forestry poles.
  3. Undertake colonial waterbird nesting population surveys.
  4. Assist with other ecological and maintenance projects at Tommy Thompson Park such as invasive vegetation removal, tree and shrub planting, and aquatic planting.
  5. Other duties as assigned.
