Position Title: Environmental Monitoring Coordinator
Organization: Grand Council Treaty #3, Territorial Planning Unit
Location: Grand Council Treaty #3 Administrative Offices, Kenora, ON

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Environmental Monitoring Coordinator will lead the development of a community based monitoring program that will contribute to the enhanced understanding of baseline water quality and climate change data in the Treaty #3 Territory. This baseline data will assist the Territorial Planning Unit (TPU) in the development of watershed management and climate change adaptation plans. The Environmental Monitoring Coordinator will engage Treaty #3 communities, leadership, government, industry, and academia to develop monitoring programs, training, and data sharing protocols.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provide technical advisory services, share program-related information, and act as a point of contact for environmental monitoring in the Territorial Planning Unit.
  • Develop a framework for a community based water and climate monitoring program.
  • Research and develop data sharing protocols and training programs with Treaty #3 communities to support community based monitoring and decision-making.
  • Build capacity through Treaty #3 youth and membership engagement, mentoring, and environmental monitoring activities and educational opportunities.
  • Plan and coordinate meetings and workshops as needed to advance environmental monitoring activities.
  • Build, collaborate, and maintain relationships with the TPU Team and GCT#3 staff, Treaty #3 Communities, and other organizations to stimulate information sharing and program integration.
  • Meet with Treaty #3 Communities to gain an understanding of local issues and enhance working relationships with each community.
  • Assist in the day to day administration of the Territorial Planning Unit.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum Bachelors degree in Environmental Studies/Science, Natural Resource Management, or other related field with 1-2 years of relevant experience in environmental education, monitoring, and program development. Candidates with extensive work experience in a similar position will also be consider in absence of a post-secondary degree.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and respectful working relationships with GCT3 staff, Treaty #3 First Nations, federal or provincial ministerial staff, and the public.
  • Understanding of Anishinaabe culture and customs, specifically those related to natural resources and the environment.
  • Ability to work independently, manage workloads, set priorities, meet deadlines and adjust to a changing workloads.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills that take into consideration the comprehension level of the intended audience.
