Position: Specialist, Environmental Outreach
Hours: 28 hours/week

Summary of Functions

This position provides outreach and communications support to CVC’s Urban Outreach Section, in particular the Greening Corporate Grounds and Your Green Yard programs. The Environmental Outreach Specialist helps advance private land stewardship and inspire environmental action in the urbanized parts of the Credit River watershed by developing, implementing, and maintaining innovative outreach and communications tools, resources, campaigns and activities that foster behaviour change. The specialist works closely with senior program coordinators to support their individual program needs and liaises with CVC and partner marketing and communications divisions.

Eligibility Requirements

Education

  • Post-secondary education with a specialization in environmental sciences/studies, ecology, natural resource management or a field appropriate to the area of specialization
  • Training or experience in communications, marketing, public relations, social sciences or related area

Experience

  • Minimum of three years’ experience related to major tasks
  • Experience coordinating adult environmental education programs and events
  • Experience in or knowledge of Community Based Social Marketing
  • Experience performing research, data collection, analysis, and report preparation
  • Experience preparing and managing budgets and project work plans
  • Experience working with committees, external partners, business communities and volunteers
  • Experience engaging with members of the public, business leaders and stakeholder groups
  • Experience in special event coordination and planning

Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Minimum of three years’ experience related to major tasks
  • Knowledge of ecological principles, stormwater management, local ecosystems and environmental conservation principles and practices
  • Ability to develop and implement engaging and effective outreach, communications and promotional materials and tactics
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills; ability to research and write a variety of different communications materials including articles, e-publications, reports and PR materials
  • Knowledge and proven expertise using social media and digital communications tools to reach landowners and encourage stewardship
  • Strong organizational and project management skills; ability to effectively manage multiple projects with overlapping tasks and within deadlines
  • Experience in MS Office, database management and Outlook
  • Sales experience an asset
  • Valid class ‘G’ Driver’s License
  • Able to work some weekends and evenings

Summary of Major Tasks

Development and coordination of outreach, communications and promotional strategies that foster behaviour change

  • Lead the development and implementation of outreach tactics that foster behavior change.
  • Generate and lead implementation of outreach ideas and strategies to enhance and expand reach to landowners in the rural or urban watershed.
  • Conduct/coordinate social market research to inform program development, respond to emerging needs and measure program performance.
  • Lead the development and implementation of new promotional strategies to increase awareness and uptake of rural or urban outreach programs in collaboration with marketing and communications division.
  • Lead the programs’ use of new media tools including e-newsletters, Twitter and Facebook in collaboration with marketing and communications division.

Development and distribution of landowner outreach and educational materials

  • Coordinate production and distribution of newsletters, factsheets, articles, landowner profiles and other outreach materials in collaboration with marketing and communications division.
  • Write content for newsletters, landowner profiles and other outreach materials.
  • Develop strategies, write content and coordinate production and distribution of promotional materials for the rural or urban outreach programs in collaboration with marketing and communications division.
  • Review and update content on program web pages; develop new content as needed in collaboration with marketing and communications division.

Development and delivery of educational events for landowners

  • Plan, coordinate and deliver presentations and workshops to landowners, committees, community groups and other stakeholders on issues facing the watershed and actions landowners can take to protect watershed health.
  • Coordinate special events such as landowner appreciation events and bus tours of stewardship projects.
  • Coordinate display booth for use at selected trade shows and events; assist with scheduling and staffing display booth at events.

Administration and support

  • Prepare funding proposals for rural or urban outreach program initiatives.
  • Manage expenditures within a fixed budget.
  • Track outreach accomplishments and behaviour changes.
  • Prepare project proposals and reports; maintain project records and contacts.
  • Act as liaison between rural or urban outreach section and marketing and communications division for development, production and distribution of section’s outreach materials and services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Anticipated Start and End Dates: July 3, 2018 to June 28, 2019 (28 hours/week)

Annual Salary Starting At: $51,020
