Position: Creative Director
Organization: New Cities Foundation Canada

Role specification

NewCities is seeking a Creative Director with knowledge of and experience working with international urban issues to join its team in Montréal.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the digital and visual communications for all NewCities events & initiatives. S/he will work closely with the rest of the Communications team, particularly the Senior Communications and Media Relations Manager to produce influential social media and marketing campaigns. S/he will also be responsible for the day-to-day management and troubleshooting of the Foundation’s website. S/he will be responsible for developing and delivering new online platforms and websites for flagship events and major campaigns.

Permanent work agreement – Full time (40 hours per week)

Annual salary range: between 42,000 and 50,000 CAD

Key responsibilities

  • Leading the development and overseeing implementation of the visual identity and branding strategy for NewCities.

  • Working across a range of media disciplines to design all visual branding and marketing material for NewCities initiatives and events (including: logos, event branding, printed and electronic booklets, brochures, presentations, and animations).

  • Designing and delivering strategic marketing campaigns for all NewCities projects, from the concept through to live event and post event evaluation.

  • Curating inspiring, intelligent and engaging social media content and toolkits for our network on the NewCities Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn pages and member networks. This uses a range of mediums including video, infographics, photography, illustration and animation.

  • Managing the daily updating and troubleshooting of the NewCities website and other event websites.

  • Maintaining the security of all NewCities websites and email accounts

  • Managing the design and publishing of the NewCities thought leadership editorial: the Big Picture.

  • Designing and building new event websites and web platforms.

  • Producing and evaluating the effectiveness of the NewCities fortnightly newsletter.

  • Publishing press material on NewCities website channels.

  • Producing event briefs including photography and videography briefs.

  • Managing on-site design communications at events (facebook live, photography, videography).

  • Using Google analytics and SEO of the NewCities website and the content published and producing quarterly reports of this data and finding ways to increase traffic to the NewCities site.

  • Line managing and supporting professional development of NewCities designer, and coordinating the work of NewCities’ external freelancers including videographers, web developers and photographers.

  • Identifying strategic digital opportunities and areas for improvement for NewCities and its programs of work.

  • Providing ongoing communications advice to the Senior Communications and Media Relations Manager.

  • Upskill and the train the NewCities team to help develop and curate effective, dynamic and engagement content to share with our audiences on social media.

Personal specification

  1. Educated to degree level in Graphic Design and Communication

  2. Minimum 4 years work experience in a Graphic & Web design or a creative position

  3. An outstanding portfolio to demonstrate key skills

  4. Fluent in English in order to be able to communicate with every team member; intermediate French desirable

  5. Eagerness to learn, and an interest in urban design.

  6. Both an excellent verbal communicator and a highly accomplished writer and editor in English, with experience of writing and editing content for websites.

  7. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work at all levels of an organization.

  8. Proactive and motivated with excellent initiative and the ability to solve problems and adapt plans to accommodate changes in objectives, resourcing, timescales or budgets.

  9. Extensive experience of using Adobe Creative Suite (Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro) and Mailchimp

  10. Extensive experience of using content management systems within dynamic and evolving environments; including experience of using WordPress, HTML and Filezilla or other FTP application, with an in-depth understanding of coding, plugins & widgets

  11. Experience working on graphic identification and branding for major international events including developing visuals ensuring partners’ visibility on different materials

  12. Demonstrable experience of developing impactful digital and social media strategies to achieve communications and organisational objectives.

  13. Demonstrable experience of working with audiences across multiple languages is a plus

  14. Experience of managing and delivering complex digital development projects. Knowledge of project management methodologies and within a membership-based organization is a plus.

  15. Experience in managing and briefing external providers such as website development and creative agency, videographer, photographer (including writing a detailed scope of work, setting up a budget and deadlines, and ensuring the providers respect the deliverables and the timeline)

  16. Experience in and understanding of evaluation techniques and synthesising, analysing and interpreting data (quantitative and qualitative) to make recommendations for improvements, including by undertaking user testing and using Google Analytics as well as equivalent tools for social media.

  17. Experience of managing people within complex and dynamic team environments, and an ability to motivate individuals to deliver agreed objectives.

  18. Experience in providing high quality training or coaching on various aspects of digital communications and explaining digital concepts to non-specialists is a plus.

  19. Experience of working in the nonprofit sector or in an international organization.
