DESCRIPTION OF OUR ORGANIC FARM

Located in the rolling hills of the eastern Townships, near the village of Frelighsburg, Les Jardins de Tessa, an operational organic vegetable farm with over 20 years of experience, is tucked among a bubble of Market Gardeners in the area. Currently in our second year established as a cooperative, we are developing and perfecting our craft in the field and eagerly await the arrival of our dynamic and passionate market gardening team who are motivated by small scale, local food systems. Developing your knowledge and skills in the field at Les Jardins de Tessa, allows one to pass through the summer season with enlightening conversations, fully immersing oneself in all elements that encompass the complex, enriching and tasty field of organic vegetable production.

Working on a 5-hectare production space, our farm is structured as a CSA farm – Community Supported Agriculture, meaning that we obtain our financial security from our members who loyally select us to be their family farmers every agricultural season. We feed over 400 families across the Montreal area, in addition to our market goers at the Saturday Sutton Market and in our local grocery stores. Our production efforts are mainly focussed on field methods, hence the use of caterpillar tunnels with new ventures into greenhouse production for early and late seasonal varieties. Les Jardins de Tessa is mechanized and integrates green manures, a system of field rotations and the production of compost. This farm is known for its abundance of autumn crops with varieties in potatoes, pumpkins, carrots, beets and cabbage.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

We are looking to fulfill 3 Market Gardening positions, to join our team for the 2021 agricultural season (7 COOP members and 3 employees).

LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT POSITION AND SCHEDULE

1. Starting May 3rd, 2021 and ending October 29th, 2021;
2. 42,5 hours/week, from Monday to Friday inclusive (7h30 start time, 17h00 end time);

CONDITIONS

1. 14$/hour;
2. Full-time employment schedule from May to October;
3. Access to a box of tasty organic vegetables every week!;
4. Possibility to live on the farm (limited space);
5. Joining us during our seasonal farm visits in the area to increase your knowledge and skills in the field;

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Maintenance of crops in the field, in the tunnels and in the greenhouse (handheld weeding, mechanical weeding, trellising, irrigation, pinching and pruning, protecting crops from pest and disease);
2. Preparation of transplantation of crops (seedlings, pinching, field transplantation);
3. Harvest management (harvesting techniques, appropriate cleaning and conditioning methods, proper storage per crop);
4. Deliveries of our vegetables baskets to the Montreal area: preparation of the baskets, driving the mini-truck, interaction with our farm members, member support and service;

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MARKET GARDENING POSITION AT TESSA

1. At times working under pressure;
2. Able to lift heavy crates;
3. Working outdoors under the beautiful sun and warm rain;
4. Engaging in a good working rhythm with appropriate speed, organization, coordination and efficiency;
5. Ability to learn alongside a dynamic, functional and experienced group;

HOPEFUL PROFILE OF OUR FUTURE CO-WORKERS

1. Autonomous while being able to function and work in a group setting;
2. Punctual, organized, dynamic, able to take initiatives and hopefully sharing a good sense of humour;
3. Farm experience, educational formations in organic agriculture a plus;
4. Available during the entire agricultural season;
