Position: Forest Technician
Organization: Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority
Location: Port Hope, Ontario (near Oshawa/Clarington/Cobourg/Peterborough)

The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) is accepting applications for the following position:

Forest Technician (Ganaraska Forest)

1-Year Contract with possible extension

Reporting to the GRCA Forester, this position will be responsible for the delivery of the forest management program for the Ganaraska Forest.

Location:

This position will be working out of the Ganaraska Forest Centre in Port Hope, located in the central section of the Ganaraska Forest at 10585 Cold Springs Camp Road.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary studies in Forestry or Natural Resource Management
  • Ability to work independently with periodic direction
  • Valid class “G” Ontario Driver’s License is required
  • Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, Access, and Arc View 3.3 or Arc Map
  • 2-3 years of experience in tree marking, record keeping, harvest inspections, and forest management operations
  • Experience with the interpretation of forest management plans, including harvesting plans, collection of forest inventory data, and understanding stand prescriptions
  • Proven experience with the safe hauling, loading, and unloading of forestry equipment, and with the safe operation of farm implements, sprayers, and chainsaws
  • Knowledge of ecology and tree species as they relate to the Ganaraska Forest
  • Assets include: Forest Insecticide License or Forestry Exterminator License; Managed Forest Tax Incentive Plan Approver designation; tree marking certification; chainsaw certification and operating experience; tree planting and tree planting planning experience

Duties Include:

  • Assist with the implementation of the Ganaraska Forest Management Plan
  • Implement field operations, such as: tree marking, harvest inspections, record keeping, developing bid proposals, inventory collection of data, and direct input to forest management implementation. Additional duties may include hazard tree removal, road building, compiling data, forestry extension, developing planting plans, and liaising with forest companies over harvesting plans
  • Complete and file harvesting reports, and operation contract follow-ups
  • Provide input and suggestions on compartmentation
  • Provide maps and prescriptions for tender packages
  • Provide support to the GRCA Stewardship Program and the Ganaraska Forest Recreation Program
