Position: Fisheries Biologist (Vancouver Island Office)
Organization: BC Conservation Foundation
Location: Lantzville, near Namaimo BC

The BCCF is seeking an experienced and motivated biologist to help deliver a diverse range of fisheries and environmental projects on Vancouver Island. Working out of the BCCF regional office in Lantzville BC, the successful candidate will bring a positive attitude as well as a willingness to learn, adapt and respond quickly to changing schedules and project responsibilities. Significant attention to detail is a must in this position.

Classification: Intermediate Project Biologist

Pay Rate: $26-$30/hr (depending on experience), plus 4% vacation paid biweekly

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm (hours can vary depending on projects)

Work Location: Vancouver Island Regional Office, Lantzville, BC

Contract Start Date: September 1, 2019

Contract End Date: March 31, 2020 (possibility of extension/term renewal dependant on acquired contracts)

Position Description:

You will work closely with the Vancouver Island based Team, as well as communicate regularly with the Vancouver Island Regional Coordinator who is based out of our Head Office, to complete field- and office-based fisheries conservation work. Your primary role will be as a restoration project biologist who will be responsible for an increasing number of important and complex projects under the BCCF’s Vancouver Island Fisheries Program, which includes various types of field work and administrative duties alike. Direct participation, training and supervision of junior staff is anticipated. Projects can be challenging and workloads vigorous; you will be required to provide excellent team-lead skills to ensure deadlines and deliverables are met on time and on budget. You will be responsible for providing progress reports and annual reports to the VI Regional Coordinator, as well as contribute to the Program’s planning and proposal-writing efforts on an ongoing basis. Professionalism is essential as you will be dealing with multiple stakeholders and have a role that can be in the public eye.

Essential Qualifications:

  • BSc Degree related to Fisheries or Aquatic Sciences or Ecological Restoration
  • Minimum 3 years’ practical work experience involving BC fisheries science, with knowledge in related field and office duties
  • Adept in physically-demanding fieldwork in challenging environments
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Experience writing funding proposals and responding to RFPs
  • Effective data analysis and excellent technical reporting skills
  • Competent computer skills and experience working with MS Office
  • Class 5 Driver’s license, with reliable transportation
  • Ability to work independently and as a supportive and valuable team member
  • Experience employing field safety protocols

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current Swiftwater Safety Level 1 Certification
  • Current Electrofishing Certification
  • Current WorkSafeBC OFA Level 1 Certification
  • Registered Professional Biologist or eligible for registration by the College of Applied Biology
  • In-depth knowledge of South Coast BC freshwater and anadromous fish stocks and their habitats
  • Fish habitat assessment, restoration and monitoring experience
  • Familiar with fish stock assessment techniques including tagging and snorkel surveys
  • Boating experience and competency
  • Experience using fisheries and field survey equipment (including sport fishing gear)
  • Experience with all stages of project management
  • Experience working with community, local government, First Nation and fish agency staff and representatives
