Position: Executive Director

Position Overview:

The Galiano Conservancy Association is seeking a dynamic, hands-on team leader with a deep commitment to community-scale conservation and restoration, strong management and people skills, substantive expertise in our core program areas, and demonstrated experience initiating and implementing bold new programs. The Executive Director’s mandate will be to deepen our core programs, strengthen our financial sustainability and management effectiveness, liaise with community and donors, provide leadership to our management team, and generally advance the goals set out in our 2019-2021 Strategic Plan, which are to:

  • Protect and restore the integrity and resilience of Galiano’s terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems for the benefit of this and future generations.
  • Own, and hold covenants on, a network of sustainably-managed protected areas.
  • Provide nature-based learning experiences to improve ecological awareness and foster environmental leadership.
  • Promote land and water stewardship.
  • Research and demonstrate effective methods in ecological restoration and stewardship.
  • Demonstrate approaches to sustainable living that reduce our ecological footprint, including mitigating and adapting to climate change.

Responsibilities:

The Executive Director is the senior staff position in the Galiano Conservancy Association, reporting to the Board of Directors. S/he is responsible for implementation of the general strategic direction set by the Board of Directors, representing the GCA to external partners and stakeholders, ensuring the organization’s financial sustainability and management effectiveness, and leadership and management of the GCA staff. The ED works on a collegial basis with a small team of staff to meet these responsibilities.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Organizational leadership: Implementing and operationalizing the vision & strategic direction set by the Board of Directors; Representing the organization to external partners, funders, and stakeholders; Liaison and relationship building within the Galiano community; Representing staff at Board meetings; Supporting Board decision-making and policy development.
  • Financial sustainability: Budget planning and high-level monitoring and reporting to Board; Building and maintaining relationships with individual, foundation, and government funders; High-level supervision of staff, fundraising and grant writing activities; Specific grant writing.
  • Leadership of staff and management of program coordinators: Acting as a leader and mentor to staff, responsibility for and oversight of hiring and staffing decisions; Setting annual performance objectives and conducting annual performance review for program coordinators (currently 5); Day to day management.
  • Program Management: Providing high-level management and overview of all programs; Collaborative project development and guidance to staff, and particularly to the program coordinators.
  • Acquisition and infrastructure: Overseeing covenants and land protection; Developing high-level vision, plans, and strategies for infrastructure.
  • Core program support: High-level resource to all programs; Providing expertise/ experience to deliver and support delivery of projects in one or more of the strategic program areas.

Experience

  • Academic or professional training and demonstrated expertise in one or more of our core program areas (conservation and restoration; nature education; renewable energy; reconciliation; sustainable food production).
  • Five or more years managing a program or organization with a budget above $300,000, with staff management, fiscal, and fund development responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated experience initiating and implementing bold new programs.
  • Track record in successful grant writing and program reporting, and working on major gift campaigns. Understanding of trends in conservation financing.
  • Experience with a Board of Directors and in a charity (as staff or volunteer).

Required Personal Attributes

  • Commitment to reconciliation.
  • Comfortable working with a wide range of stakeholders and volunteers –local residents, First Nations, government officials, conservation peers, Board members and foundations.
  • Passion for the Gulf Islands and southwestern B.C.’s ecosystems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and confident speaker.
  • Ability to think strategically, meeting short-term commitments while always moving towards the bigger vision.

Preferred Personal Attributes

  • Experience in nurturing relationships between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous peoples.
  • Knowledge of the history of the environmental movement and the philosophies and worldviews informing it.

Compensation, location, and start date:

This is a 4 day/week salaried position based in our new program building at the Millard Learning Centre on Galiano Island, B.C., with a salary range of $50,000-$55,000 commensurate with skills and experience, 4 weeks paid holiday and flexible working hours. There is a possibility of a full-time position, with prorated salary ($60 - $65,000) depending on the candidate. A shared-cost benefits plan is currently under consideration. Preferred start date is December 2019, to allow for a small period of overlap with the outgoing Executive Director.

About Galiano Island and the Galiano Conservancy Association:

Galiano Island is located in the Salish Sea and Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystem, within the asserted, unceded and shared territory of the Penelakut, Lamalcha, Hwiltsum, and other Hul’qumi’num speaking peoples, as well as the ceded territory of the Tsawwassen First Nation. The Island is home to roughly 1,200 full time residents, and has basic commercial and health care services, an elementary school, and regular ferry service to Vancouver, Victoria, and neighbouring Gulf Islands, and seaplane service to Vancouver.

The Galiano Conservancy Association is a community-based non-profit society and registered charity founded 30 years ago. Our mission is to protect, steward and restore Galiano Island ecosystems by creating a network of natural areas where a healthy environment, learning and a love of nature flourish. One of BC's first land trusts, the Conservancy owns or has covenants on 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of environmentally sensitive properties on Galiano, and has contributed to the protection of 2,000 acres (800 hectares). We created and operate the Millard Learning Centre– a place of immersion in nature, action-oriented hands-on learning and self-esteem building programs that engage participants in sustainable, respectful practices from food security to renewable energy to ecological restoration. We also offer conservation mapping and have received international recognition for our innovative work in forest restoration.

The GCA has an annual operating budget of ~$550,000, 10 full and part-time staff, and around 10 seasonal co-op and summer students and international interns. We are governed by an active nine-member Board and supported by many community volunteers.
