SUSTAINABILITY MANAGEMENT

Position: Director of Sustainability
Organization: Western University
Location: London, Ontario

Facilities Management is responsible for the planning, development, engineering, construction, operation, maintenance and stewardship of all the buildings, infrastructure, sites and services within Western’s campus community.

The Director of Sustainability is accountable for providing strategic leadership for the development, implementation and management of plans and initiatives designed to incorporate and advance principles of sustainability across campus. As part of the Facilities Management senior leadership team, the Director will contribute to Western’s resiliency planning by developing strategies that advance the long-term survival of the institution. The incumbent will act as a centralized resource for sustainability information, and lead sustainability initiatives that are economically viable, environmentally sound and foster a sustainable and efficient living and working environment. The Director will provide education to staff, faculty and students regarding sustainability, waste reduction and energy conservation, and will work to ensure that Western becomes a recognized leader in environmental sustainability. The incumbent will lead the development and implementation of strategic sustainability plans, and manage the allocation of human and financial resources.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Masters of Environmental Sustainability or related field
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) by the Association of Energy Engineers preferred
  • Project and/or change management training preferred

Experience:

  • 10 years in the field of environmental and sustainability management or related field within the industrial, commercial and/or institutional sectors
  • 10 years’ experience implementing initiatives resulting in progressive improvement of an institution’s environmental and sustainability practices, e.g. STARS rating
  • 3 years leadership experience in a complex environment
  • Experience in a post-secondary academic environment preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Detailed knowledge of sustainability and environmental topics (e.g. waste reduction, alternative transportation, conservation, procurement, STARS reporting, life cycle planning)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to complete detailed analytics and reports
  • Presentation skills to deliver engaging and informative presentations that clearly explain information to audiences using appropriate communication channels
  • Ability to establish and build healthy working relations and partnerships with clients, peers and external stakeholders
  • Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
  • Ability to apply creativity and recommend strategies for engagement initiatives in response to cultural and social trends
  • Ability to effectively drive and manage change initiatives that align with organizational strategies
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to gain consensus
  • Excellent organizational, time management and project management skills
  • Self-driven, independent thinker who is highly motivated and possesses an intrinsic passion for quality and process improvement
  • Innovative and flexible critical thinking skills to adjust to and implement new processes or technology to the University’s advantage
  • Strong problem solving skills including experience formulating and executing action plans
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and related budgets with strict deadlines
  • Leadership skills with the ability to inspire and develop a shared vision to lead a team to excellence
  • Ability to anticipate new trends and identify opportunities to promote the strategic goals of the University
  • Intermediate proficiency in the use of standard office computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office) as well as web, media and promotional design applications
