Position: Strategic Watershed Action Team (SWAT) Crew Leader

Hours: 40 hrs/week, 28 week contract (22 Apr 2019- 25 Oct 2019)

Job Description: Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC) is looking for an energetic and enthusiastic individual to lead a field team in brook trout habitat recovery in southern Ontario. The Crew Leader will supervise a small team* and perform instream aquatic habitat rehabilitation work, monitoring and assessment. The team will work independently and collaborate with chapter volunteers to accomplish many projects.

The Crew Leader will manage and implement the field program and ensure work is completed in a safe and timely manner. This position requires experience in aquatic restoration, excellent team management skills as well as good communication skills. Familiarity with stream rehabilitation techniques (bioengineering, aquatic habitat enhancement), monitoring (benthic invertebrate collections, water quality analyses) and assessment field work (aquatic habitat assessments, electrofishing fisheries surveys) are key. The team will work under the direction of the TUC biologists and volunteer chapter members to assist with community outreach activities such as chapter workdays. The Crew Lead will also be responsible for report writing, data management, creation of project signs and other duties as assigned.

Work duties will frequently take place on weekends. This job is physically active and requires lifting and carrying weighted items. This position is based in Guelph but work will be done in watersheds across southern Ontario.


  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in restoration, ecology, biology or related field
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in related position
  • Comfortable in the outdoors, around water and in adverse weather conditions
  • Experience working with youth, volunteers and other partner groups
  • Ability to communicate scientific information to the general public
  • Experience with Microsoft office programs and social media
  • Excellent time management
  • Ability to manage field program and logistics
  • Must have some evening and weekend availability
  • Ontario G Driver's License, with good driving record required
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification required

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Stream restoration experience
  • Class 2 Backpack Electrofishing Certificate or experience
  • Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network certification or experience
  • Ontario Stream Assessment Program certification or experience
  • Fish and minnow identification considered is an asset
  • Chain Saw Safety Ontario course is considered an asset
  • Experience with InDesign or Photoshop is considered an asset
