Position: General Manager

Are you a leader, passionate about active, sustainable transportation and tourism? Parkbus is currently seeking a full-time General Manager. Parkbus General Manager role offers the successful candidate an opportunity to play a critical role in the Parkbus’ strategic direction as well as day to day operational aspects across Canada. The General Manager is the senior strategic and administrative leader of Parkbus. They represent Parkbus at various levels, and work with senior government representatives, social organizations and enterprises to further Parkbus’ mission. Parkbus connects city dwellers with nature through accessible transportation options. Founded in 2010, we operate bus services to National and Provincial Parks from major cities across Canada. We also operate community nature and outdoor programs such as ActiveDays and NatureLink. In British Columbia, Parkbus programs are run by BEST, a non-profit charitable organization with a long history promoting sustainable transportation. In the rest of Canada, our programs are run by Transportation Options, an Ontario-based non-profit organization dedicated to fostering sustainable tourism and transportation.

Key Responsibilities for the General Manager position

Key responsibilities of the General Manager include:

  • Executes the strategic direction set in collaboration with the Board and the executive team

  • Seeks out new growth opportunities for the project and makes recommendations to the executive on the creation/adoption or elimination of Parkbus programming or collaborative opportunities,

  • Leads marketing and communication initiatives on Parkbus’ behalf, including, developing press releases, blogs, fundraising materials, and newsletters

  • Leads the staff, hires, assigns, supervises, evaluates and releases staff, and manages Parkbus operations on a day-to-day basis,

  • Develops and supervises projects and programs to ensure they meet their goals and timelines,

  • Ensures that Parkbus is sustainable in all aspects of its operations, and that Parkbus continually improves its performance in striving to meet its mission,

  • Continuously improves and monitors the adherence of standard operating procedures, policies, laws and regulations

  • Leads operational financial management, budgeting, forecasting, reconciliation, and reporting,

  • Keeping up to date with sustainable transportation trends, developments and policies,

  • Maintain and develop key relationships with stakeholders, partners, and funders.


The GM is responsible for supervising all staff members, and providing support to other staff in their management of Parkbus volunteers and casual staff members.

Parkbus strives to be an inclusive, democratic workplace. The General Manager’s role is often more to answer questions and advise staff when requested than dictating tasks. Many decisions are made collectively or by the person who has the most experience with a particular issue. This will depend on the knowledge of staff and the development level of each program.

Reporting Relationship

The Parkbus General Manager reports to the Board of Directors/Senior Team at their weekly meetings and on an adhoc basis as required.


  • Experience working with diverse partners,

  • Strong marketing and communication experience, track record in growth

  • Very self-motivated,

  • Passion for sustainable modes of transportation,

  • Experience managing in a collaborative, dynamic environment,

  • Experience with program and social enterprise development,

  • Experience with budgeting and fiscal responsibility,

  • 3-5 years management experience.


  • Bilingual

  • Outdoor experience

Working Conditions

The Parkbus office is located at Toronto Center for Social Innovation (CSI). CSI is a collaborative environment and includes flex space for meetings and shared kitchen facilities.

Parkbus offers a flexible workspace for staff including the opportunity to work remotely, and set alternative schedules. The Parkbus General Manager is expected to be regularly present in the office to support staff, but can also work remotely. The General Manager is expected to accommodate external and internal meetings, including meetings on evenings and weekends, with time in lieu for hours over the standard 35 hours per week.


  • Salary commensurate with experience,

  • Parkbus is able to offer a generous paid vacation period,

  • Parkbus is unable to offer extended health benefits.
