Communications Manager and Program Coordinator

BTCEA is looking for a dynamic core team member to join our dedicated group of environmental education change makers who have been developing and delivering high impact student, teacher and community programming across Metro Vancouver for over a decade. This full-time position starts on or before February 5th, 2018. Job Application deadline is January 13th, with a preference for earlier.

We are looking for someone who has passion and commitment to systemically work on environmental and social justice issues. Bringing experience and knowledge in communications, program coordination and/or education is ideal, along with key skills to co-create a collaborative and competent team.

The main focus of this role is to create clear, compelling, informed communications, such as: key messaging, grant writing, reports and evaluations, web presence, and donor & teacher communications. Additionally, being the Program Coordinator for the ‘Climate Action Champions’ initiative entails all the detailed logistics of co-developing and implementing a program in 20 Metro Vancouver schools.

Be The Change Earth Alliance -Vancouver, BC

Be The Change Earth Alliance (BTCEA) is a charitable non-profit that focuses on global sustainability through education that empowers personal and collective change. This is predominately accomplished through applying 21st century educational pedagogical approaches to environmental and social justice issues through curriculum materials for middle and secondary school teachers, as well as workshops and training for student and teacher champions. Topics we focus on include climate change, resource conservation, waste reduction, food systems and choices, consumer awareness and habits, ‘connection’ with community, ourselves and others, and various social justice issues, such as water privatization, food security, gender, poverty and more. To us, these issues and their solutions are all intrinsically connected.

Currently we are launching a new program called Climate Action Champions Initiative (CAChI). Ongoing projects include a Social Innovation research project and our SLS: Student Leadership in Sustainability curriculum program. Next summer we will be adapting our materials to be easily accessible to multiple demographics, including STEAM and careers focuses.

The Communications Manager and Program Coordinator Role

The main duties of this role are creating clear, compelling, informed communications, with grant writing, program and project evaluation and reporting, managing and creating strategic communications, and fundraising support. Additionally, you will be supporting workshop facilitation, program coordination, program development as needed. The team players at Be The Change generally wear several hats throughout the year and specialize in one or two areas. Our IDEAL candidate has many of the following attributes, skills, or experiences:

  • strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • a talent for succinctly capturing thoughts, understanding the needs of potential partners and expressing them in creative ways within written proposals
  • experience with grant writing, publications, and/or public speaking
  • comfortable switching from macro to micro; from understanding the strategic value and dynamics of an organization’s product or service, to caring about visual designs and grammatical accuracy at a pixel or punctuation level
  • likes taking care of the details and to see projects through to completion
  • self-motivated and able to set priorities and also able to be highly collaborative on a project
  • familiar with some experience working in the K-12 education system or other forms of teaching
  • experience managing programs or projects
  • experience or strong interest in strategic development and systems thinking
  • multi-lingual; specifically French
  • experience with Nation Builder and/or able to pick up web programs, web contact and content management systems fairly easily
  • familiar with engagement ladders or pyramids, system or behaviour change model or theories of change
  • creative digital skills such as Photoshop or Illustrator;
  • very interested in topics and developments in the field of environmental and social impact and innovation
  • knowledge of and commitment to fostering inclusive workspaces

Job Specifications

We are looking for a long-term commitment that would proceed in stages. We will hire for an initial six-month contract starting on or before Feb 5th (depending on hiring and interview process), with the option and intention to renew the contract. The position’s hours could range from 30 to 37hrs a week and wage could vary from $30,000 - $40,000 / year depending upon experience, education, hours, flexibility and other work arrangements. Hourly, would be in between $17- $22/hr. At this time we are hiring through a wage subsidy that requires the applicant to be under 30 and either a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or have been granted refugee status in Canada.
