Position: Communications Director
Organization: reThink Green
Location: Sudbury, Ontario

reThink Green is an environmental not-for-profit organization that brings together ideas, partners, and resources to build a more sustainable community in Northeastern Ontario. Current projects include the annual Greater Sudbury Earth Festival, Green Economy North, Smart Green Communities, Shared Platforms, and the Sudbury Commuter Challenge. By bringing together the community, businesses and government, reThink Green promotes creative collaboration and dialogue about local and global environmental issues. reThink Green seeks Communications Director for a 1-year maternity leave replacement contract.

Job Duties

The Communications Director leads all communication, marketing, and event planning initiatives with the support of other staff members.

Event Planning & Coordination (40%)

  • Oversee the planning and coordination of all reThink Green and Green Economy North events including, but not limited to:
    • Greater Sudbury Earth Festival
    • Green Economy North Evening of Recognition
    • Green Economy North Business Forum
    • Green Economy North Business Development Event
    • Sudbury Commuter Challenge
    • reThink Green Annual General Meeting
  • Attentively manage event budgets
  • Work closely with reThink Green graphic designer to create all event materials for web and print
  • Promote all events to the appropriate audience and achieve attendance goals
  • Continue to build partnerships with local organizations to cross-promote large events
  • Complete and submit local, regional, and provincial funding applications

Marketing and Communications (40%)

  • Continue to implement the reThink Green and Green Economy North communications and social media strategies
  • Build relationships with corporate and media outlets to meet annual event and program sponsorship goals
  • Mange media relations to maintain a positive community presence and track media engagement
  • Draft media releases and host media events when needed
  • Oversee website content and ensure all pages of all website are up-to-date
  • Work closely with reThink Green translation services to ensure all communications materials are available in English and French
  • Oversee all social media platforms and instruct other staff on professional use of social media when required
  • Lead outreach campaigns to members, stakeholders, media, and general public
  • Assist with the reThink Green and Green Economy North annual reports
  • Liaise with reThink Green and Green Economy North members, partners, stakeholders, and volunteers

Management and Administration (20%)

  • Maintain all communication, marketing, and events files and folders (electronically and hard copy)
  • Supervise communications and events team (1-2 staff members and 1 annual coop student)
  • Recruit and support events volunteers
  • Manage front line communications and respond to general inquiries about reThink Green programs

Education and Experience

  • Degree or diploma in communications, marketing, environmental communication, science communication, or related discipline
  • Minimum 2 years related professional experience directing a communication team, leading marketing initiatives, and independent event planning
  • Experience training, supervising, and mentoring new staff, interns, and students
  • Strong understanding of local environmental initiatives and larger global issues
  • Developed knowledge of industry best practices
  • Experience planning and managing long-term projects, maintaining budgets, and meeting deadlines

Key Skills and Characteristics

Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills (oral and written); knowledge of effective communication tools and strategies to engage members, the media and the general public; creativity to keep communications fresh and exciting; bilingualism considered a significant asset.

Project Management Skills: Conscientious and detail-oriented; ability to plan, strategize, set goals, develop work plans, work efficiently and track progress; strong ability to work independently; ability to multi-task and assist with multiple projects and initiatives; initiative to explore new ideas and create new opportunities; ability to make decisions and resolve problems.

Interpersonal Skills: Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally. Anticipate, understand, and respond to the needs of clients to meet or exceed their expectations. Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions.

Adaptability: Demonstrate a willingness to be flexible, versatile and adapt to a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency. Ability to learn new technologies and master new skills.
