Position: Conservation Coordinator
Type: full-time, paid (see below)
Reports to: Executive Director
Organization: Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy
Location: Spadina and Davenport, Toronto, Ontario

Our Conservancy protects 171 nature reserves from Caledon to Manitoulin with 55 species of conservation concern. Primarily we manage the land for nature, but we also have hiking trails. We are a small organization looking for help with administration work in the office as well as field work.

Conservation Coordinator — Objective

  • To maintain and enhance EBC’s reputation as the pre-eminent regional land trust in Ontario with the highest rate of acquisition and lowest unit cost
  • To learn as much as possible about land conservation from the executive director and other experts
  • To replicate EBC’s success and build the network of nature reserves and resources available to EBC as quickly as possible
  • To work toward the objectives set out in EO Wilson’s Half Earth and meet the objectives set out in the Biodiversity Initiatives/Agreements of the UN, Canada and Ontario.

Experience and Skills:

  • Education in a relevant environmental/conservation field
  • Knowledge of Ontario Flora & Fauna
  • Great organizational abilities
  • Good at multi tasking
  • Comfortable outdoors in secluded wilderness
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of SAR, COSEWIC
  • Experience and/or passion for the Non Profit sector
  • Grant work is an asset
  • Ability to work alone
  • Knowledge of GIS software (ARC Map, QGIS...)
  • Proficient in Excel and Word
  • Leadership experience
  • Event planning an asset
  • Willing to learn and be flexible

This position is categorized into 5 sections of concentration: Stewardship, Acquisition, Outreach, Fundraising and Administration roughly broken down as follows,

Stewardship Coordinator (15 hrs/week)

  • Monitor properties using a network of volunteers incl: build volunteer base, train volunteers, visit properties, collect and store reports, ensure regular visits, report status and problems, assist with enforcement
  • Steward properties to optimize habitat for SAR in balance with organizational objectives and prepare stewardship plans for owned properties
  • Create EcoReports for emerging projects to standards of the EcoGift program as requested
  • Create Baseline reports and coordinate species inventories to standards of the EcoGift program as requested
  • Maintain EBC’s list of species of conservation concern
  • Apply for and administer grants related to SAR and stewardship
  • Run events, particularly those related to SAR and stewardship
  • Cooperate with and support the trail building and public access to reserves
  • Prepare draft board reports
  • Knowledge of Ontario Flora and Fauna an asset

Outreach Coordinator (5 hours/week)

  • Coordinate social media
  • Help plan and execute events
  • Prepare brochures and printed materials
  • Prepare media releases, Precipice content with ED (Exceutive Director)
  • Assist the executive director to increase public awareness of EBC
  • Encourage younger members and supporters

Administration (1 hr per week or as required)

  • Prepare employment records for own EI, CPP, deductions etc
  • Assist ED as required

Fundraising Trainee (5 hrs/week)

  • Suggest likely sources of funds
  • Respond to suggestions of ED and assess the cost/benefit of funding applications
  • Draft funding/grant applications (at least one per month)
  • Assist with funder contact
  • Complete work to ensure funder results when grants approved

Acquisition Trainee (10 hours/week)

  • Attend outreach events to meet potential land donors
  • Visit landowners with ED
  • Help coordinate applications with EcoGift
  • Help ED with planning, agreements, landowner contact, approvals
  • Participate in field work, and be comfortable outdoors

All work to be in minimum weekly consultation with ED to include weekly progress report, weekly anticipated activities, and timesheet reporting broken down by project name and category of work. Full consultation with ED is expected, including suggestions, recommendations, comments on suggested reading and full give and take discussion.

This work will include evenings, weekends and driving to sites. It is expected that driving time will be largely on a volunteer basis. Mileage will be compensated at EBC rates.
