About Community Micro Lending

Community Micro Lending is a non-profit society serving Greater Victoria, BC. Since 2009, we have worked to connect local entrepreneurs with the resources, training and support they need to start or expand community-scale enterprises.

We do this through two main approaches: facilitating peer-to-peer microloans between community members and providing inclusive, accessible financial literacy and entrepreneurship training programs.

As a non-profit organization, our clients often face intersectional barriers to accessing traditional avenues of support. These barriers include but are not limited to race, immigration status, gender, trauma, low-incomes, disability, challenges with mental health and substance use, age, childcare commitments, education and work experience. Staff and volunteers work hard to meet clients where they’re at and to connect them with wrap-around support to increase access to programs and services. Staff, facilitators and volunteers are expected to approach these efforts with the intention of growing client confidence and connecting them with the skills, knowledge and resources they need to bring ideas to life. Through this work, we aim to build thriving, resilient communities one entrepreneur at a time.

About the position

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Community Micro Lending’s staff, volunteers, programs, and the execution of its mission. The ED will initially develop deep knowledge of the ecosystem, core programs and services, operations, and business plans in partnership with the current ED, staff and board.

This is a part time position of up to 30 hours/week at $25/hour.

The ideal candidate will be based in Greater Victoria with the capacity to work remotely from home.

Term

Anticipated Start Date: Dec 1, 2020

This is a permanent position with a 6 month probationary period.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Directs and is responsible for the completion of all day-to-day operations
  • Implements policy as directed by the board
  • Hires, trains, delegates, supervises, evaluates, and releases all staff and volunteers
  • Attends all board and committee meetings
  • Implements fundraising activities in support of the organization
  • Acts as a consultant to the board its committees

Primary Responsibilities

Operations

  • Ensure all operational requirements are fulfilled:

    • Receive, triage and respond to inquiries from the public and partners;
    • Clarify all operational requirements for programs and partnerships;
    • Manage all loan programs providing direct service delivery as required;
    • Manage training program facilitators; manage all program processes including promotion, registration, delivery, completion and reporting;
    • Develop and deliver self-employment training programs as required.

Communications:

  • Media: Produce and distribute media releases and respond to media inquiries to promote CML’s work in the region.
  • Digital communications: Produce digital communications including regular e-newsletters, borrower updates, website maintenance and updates, and social media as required.
  • Presentations: Create and maintain up to date presentation materials for use at events and speaking engagements.

Finance & Development

  • Budget and cashflow: Develop, implement, and monitor the budget and cashflow scenarios for the organization, ensuring all financial decisions are in keeping with the goals of organization
  • Revenue development: Identify, explore and pursue new sources of revenue
  • Grant writing: Create and submit grant applications, in collaboration with other local non-profit organizations when appropriate
  • Fundraising: Undertake fundraising activities to support fill loan and organization requirements

Relationship Management

  • Manage all contracts, agreements and legal obligations of the organization
  • Create and maintain positive relationships with businesses, non-profit organizations, professional organizations, financial institutions and various levels of government
  • Perform local outreach activities including presentations as requested

People Management

  • Hire, train, delegate, supervise, evaluate, and release all staff and contractors
  • Hire, train, delegate, supervise, evaluate, and release all volunteers, including operations volunteers, coaches and mentors.

Board Management

  • Schedule regular meetings with the board
  • Prepare board meeting documents and reports
  • Escalate any risk factors (financial, reputational) to board as needed
  • Weekly Check ins with board chair or delegate during probationary period
  • Work with Board Chair or delegate on areas of primary responsibilities

Qualifications and Skills

Education & Experience

  • Post secondary education in Business Administration or a related area is preferred
  • Experience in nonprofit leadership and working with a volunteer board of directors
  • Financial management and budget development skills
  • Proven ability to work with people with intersectional barriers
  • Strong computer skills, especially with Wordpress, CiviCRM, GSuite and excel
  • Working knowledge of microfinance and social enterprise
  • Experience facilitating workshops and programs to diverse communities through virtual platforms
  • Experience working with self-employed people as a small business coach and/or mentor is preferred
  • Experience with one on one and small group coaching is an asset

Communication

  • Able to provide timely and concise information and to respond effectively to inquiries, issues and concerns both orally and in writing
  • Able to express and present thoughts, opinions, preferences and complex ideas clearly, succinctly and in an understandable manner
